Friday morning on a San Francisco Radio station they are doing a trvia contest. Ont of the quetions is "Who was the First TV Couple to appear in bed together?"
They gave the answer as being the Flintstones. I believe the answer is Ozzie and Harriet. I remember reading about how the Network censors did not want any couple in bed together in the 50's and 60's. Ozzie Nelson challenged this because he and Harriet were really married and for them to be in seperate beds was ridiculous. He got his way and there are episodes with the two of them in bed together. Does anyone else have any comments.? Lucy and Ricky had twin beds. |

Leave It to Beaver was clever. They never actually showed Ward and June's bedroom, at least that I know of. Thus were left to assume they slept in one bed. Which is better then seeing those stupid single beds like they have on The Dick Van Dyke Show, I Love Lucy and The Donna Reed Show, to name a few.

< "Who was the First TV Couple to appear in bed together?" >
I have read that this is in one of the first TV sitcoms, Mary Kay and Johnny, which was presented live in the late 40's, and of which there was no duplication. I am not positive, but I think I also read this was a real-life married couple and it was a 15-minute show seen only in the New York area. < They never actually showed Ward and June's bedroom, at least that I know of. > I know we see Ward and June's bedroom at least in "The Party Spoiler" and in the ep where Beaver lets the tramp, Jeff, into the house and he takes a bubblebath in their bathroom and steals one of Ward's suits. And although I have not seen it for years, I do remember one tag scene where Ward and June are in bed together, and in fact the ep ends with them embracing under the covers. It's possible I may, in my recollections of years past, be confusing different shows, but I feel certain about this because Ward makes one of his clever but corny quips, and June just says, "Oh, Ward!" as they hug and the scene ends. |

tdr, I think you are confusing Leave It To Beaver with another show.
I can remember a few instances where Ward or June came out of their bedroom after Wally or Beaver called them, but we never got a glimpse of them together in their bed. Actually, we really do not get much of a view of their bedroom except in the episode you mention about the tramp. The creators of the show were clever in not showing them together in bed at all, at least, I sure don't remember them being shown in bed together. But you never know with TV Land cutting scenes from the show.

...wasn't the 'Brady Bunch' the first to show a couple in the 'same bed'?
There were numerous episodes from other shows with couples in bed...but not the same one! pontoon

I thought Lily and Herman Munster were the first tv couple to share a bed together. I know what you mean about the single beds or twin beds. That idea was crazy.

What about the episode where they went camping? While it was not their own bed, they were shown together in a bed I believe.

We also got a glimpse of the bedroom in the episode where Beaver tries to sabotage Wally's party with gags. You see a twin bed that looks barely big enough to sleep one.

Actually, they do show Ward's bedroom or rather the door to his bedroom and Ward comes out with his hair all messed up. It was the episode where Beaver backs the car out of the driveway and Wally, who has no license, has to drive the car up the driveway and Ward gets yelled at by the judge. I just loved seeing the usually beautiful Ward come to the door like a wildman. So cool.

I remember one episode distinctly in which we see June and Ward's bedroom with them in it. I don't know the name of it but Wally was the party spoiler. Ward and June were in the bedroom while Wally was having a party downstairs. They weren't shown together in bed though. June was sitting on the bed looking at a magazine and Ward was sitting at the tv set trying to adjust it.
