Default Continuity

Tags had a continuity person in the credits at the end of the show. That makes it even funnier how many continuity issues there are from show to show. None are important enough to take away the great comedy of the series, but provide great trivia though. Tags had so many writers I believe they they would jumble facts up as opposed to having a regular writing team. A few of the many continuity issues I've spotted;

Floyd Beasley or Lawson?
Goober Beasley or Pyle?
Floyd Warren's uncle or is he?
Goober and Flora once a couple, then they barely know each other.
The described long time family practice doctor changes each episode someone gets sick.
And on and on and on.

Curious if anyone has spotted any I've missed.

1. Opie's Ma- While on "The Danny Thomas Show" de facto pilot, Andy definitely states that Opie's Ma died when his son was a tiny baby. There's absolutely NO mention of her fate on this show nor even whether the marriage ended via her death or [horrors]divorce and absolutely nothing re how he and 'the 1st Mrs. Taylor' had met, courted, etc. despite numerous recollections and reunions with old girlfriends from prior to his marriage.

2. Barney's mother- In spite of the fact that Mrs. Fife is seen in the 2nd episode of the series 'The Manhunt' when her son overzealously attempts to detain her and it appears from this episode that she lives in or very nearby Mayberry, she is never seen nor referred to again in the present tense by her son or her nephew Andy or even her presumed sister Aunt Bee (since if Andy and Barney are first cousins and Barney's surname is Fife it's a virtual certainty that Mrs. Fife's maiden name was Taylor ). Oddly, she doesn't even slightly resemble any of her supposed relatives.

3. Ellie's Exit- Perhaps it's bias on my part but she was my fave or Andy's flames and, regardless of the reasons of Miss Donahue's departure from the show, the viewers deserved some explanation re her whereabouts the next season.

There's an old Phil Donahue from the 80s and Andy Griffith said I'm so many words he and Elinor Donahue had horrible chemistry.

Though one thing I've noticed is when any tags cast talked about the show from 50+ years ago their recollection of facts is very cloudy sometimes.

Barney & Andy's mothers could've been sisters, in which case Barney wouldn't be related to Aunt Bee except by marriage, and his mother would've had a different maiden name, same as Andy's mom's.

I read or heard from Elinor Donahue herself that she left the show due to exhaustion. She was probably tired after going straight from 6 seasons of Father Knows Best to a regular role on another sitcom.

In the interview I read, Elinor did not seem to remember much about her TAGS experience...!

Here's another continuity issue:

Bernard P. Fife or Bernard Milton Fife ?

The Sheriffs who preceded Andy. In Citizen's arrest Andy lists off several people who directly preceded him as Sheriff with Fred Pailey being listed as the man who was Sheriff before Andy took over. However in The Case of the Punch in the Nose, Andy mentions a Sheriff Poindexter who was Sheriff before he and Barney took office. Speaking of this there's also some discontinuity about this. In Citizen's arrest Andy says that he and Barney have been on the force for ten years while in Barney's Physical Barney's only been deputy for five years.

I remember a George Goober Lindsey interview where he was asked about his favorite episode. He said he liked the talking dog one. Opie and a buddy plant a walkie talkie on a hound duping Goober that the dog could talk.

Lindsey said he liked it because it showed Goober had intelligence and could problem solve.

He obviously couldn't get the facts straight about the episode because it made Goober look dimwitted.

I remember Elinor Donahue saying she hated working on the Odd couple TV show. The reason why I don't remember.

I thought in the first episode (or an early episode) Barney makes reference to Andy and he being cousins?
