Default Mary's Looks

What's going on with MTM's looks lately. In December she did a guest spot on Ellen Degeneres's show and she looked like she was next to death. I found it uncomfortable to look at her. On March 11 (the six month anniversary of 9-11), she was on CNN reading a poem written by someone who worked at the World Trade Center and lost dozens of friends. Mary looked horrible. She looked so bad her presence distracted from the poem she was reading. I figured it was a combination of bad health from diabetes and her overdoing all the plastic surgery. But now in the last week, I've seen her on three shows -- Letterman, Today (or was it GMA?), and Larry King. On all three she looked great, pretty much like her old self. I couldn't believe the change. I was astonished! How could she look so bad just a couple months ago and now look great? I don't understand it. Does anyone understand what's going on? I'm baffled.

She was here in Minneapolis on Wednesday for the unveiling of a statue of her downtown, and she did an interview with one of the local news stations... She looked pretty ragged.

That's interesting. And now I'm even more confused. She was in Minneapolis in the morning and looked ragged. That evening she was on Larry King Live and looked great. I'm VERY confused. Has anyone else notice her go from looking terrible to looking great? I've never seen anyone whose looks can change that way and so quickly. Surely there's an explanation.

I'm a fan of Marys, but to be honest, I don't think she's aged well, and it started early. She was a vision of youth on The Dick Van Dyke Show and on the early years of The Mary Tyler Moore Show. Towards the end of MTM, she began to show her age, and she was only in her mid to late 30s.
I attribute this to her health issues and her problem with alcohol which she eventually overcame.
Also, losing her only child took a toll on her looks as well.

I've been a Mary fan for several years now, and I can tell you that her looks do fluctuate a lot from one appearance to the next. Plus you've got to factor in her health. Overall, though, I think she looks pretty good right now!

yeah i agree, her looks these days do seem to fluctuate a lot. although she has looked pretty decent during her talk show appearances. i guess it goes with the territory of having the kind of life she has had.

I think being very, very thin doesn't help. I've noticed that very skinny people tend to age poorly.

I agree that Mary looks great for her age, but sometimes she does look like she has aged a lot. I think the reason for the fluctuations are mostly due to different show's hair/make-up departments and how good a job they do and the lighting. It's amazing how much those things can play a difference. And I also agree that her being extremely thin doesn't help either. Anywho, her and Valerie Harper (who hasn't even had plastic surgery!) amaze me with how good they look for their age, plastic surgery or not.

Yes her appearance does seem to fluctuate probably due to her health. Also, the face lift she got a few years ago really didn't help. I agree with the poster who said that she looked great on the Van Dyke show and the first few years of MTM. But then she really did start to age rapidly (though the hairstyle she used for much of the sixth season didn't help either!!) but the lady is classy and beautiful inside and for a 65 year old woman looks pretty darn good.

Did anyone see her last Rosie appearance though? I thought she looked really good, the best I'd seen her in a long time. I think they're re-airing that one again soon BTW, but I don't know if it's the appearance I'm thinking of. She was on Rosie a couple times this last season. Anyway, just rambling on...
