Default Postcard from Amsterdam

Are there even words to describe how cool this town is? I am absolutely in love with Amsterdam!!! This city is alive and chock full of people who have a real lust for living, not all downtrodden and pissy and overworked and impatient like they were in London and Belgium (I still liked London but I don't care if I never make it back to Belgium).

And to top it all off, FREE INTERNET!!! Whoohooooo! And Pepsi! I swear every other city in Europe has some exclusive contract with Coca-Cola. Of course I still can't find a Mountain Dew, but I'll get by with Pepsi.

I JUST got back from a lively stroll through the Red Light District. I thought it was pretty fun, but my mom was so freaking worried. She does not know how to relax at all. I must say, I love my mom and all, and we get along fine and all, but I so wish I could ditch her in this town. I feel I can't really see Amsterdam when she has her iron grips in me (she like never lets me out of her sight unless it's for maybe like 2 minutes, which is very very irritating).

Well I don't know what else to tell you really....like I said there aren't really words to describe this city, you simply must COME!! It's beautiful and charming and exciting and ALIVE, and the people here are nice.

See ya all later!

Heya! Sounds like you're having a great time.

Free internet? Now that's a great place.

Cool! My dad was in Holland (or the Netherlands, whatever they call it) during Vietnam and he thought it was nice too. Paris was the town he hated. He thought it looked like a trash heap.

Oh no, I'm going to London in July. Are the residents really that pissy? Gosh, I hope not.

No they're not really that bad. Actually most people are quite nice there. It's just that you can tell sometimes that they're worn out or tired and things, and I got the feeling that many of them get annoyed with tourists when they use the Underground, because the locals are usually in a hurry down there, and tourists just get in their way. But don't take what I said to imply that people in London are mean. Most were quite nice. It's just that they seem more wound up there, and things are more mellow here. But if you need directions someplace, ask a cop, they seem to know the city much better than some other people. We were given bad direction several times by people on the street.

You'll have a blast in London, it is a great city!

I understand the thing about the Underground. It's the same with BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit). Some people, who travel on BART everyday have a sense of superiority over occasional riders. Although the only tourists I ever saw at a BART station were these Irish teenagers (I assumed they were Irish, by their accents) who were making fun of George Bush. One of them was bashing Americans on whole, which wasn't probably the best idea, since there was this huge crowd standing around.

London-ers have a reputation for being really defensive and unwelcoming but it's not entirely true. If you find yourself in the city centre at rush hour then most people probably will ignore you but that's cos they're either on their way to or from work and they can't be arsed with dealing with tourists. You'll find that most people in London are actually ok. They're not as friendly as some Glasweigen folk but not everyone can be as cool as us Scots so we'll just have to forgive 'em!
The unfortunate thing is that when most Americans decide they're gonna visit Britain, London is actually the only city they visit so they leave with the impression that everyone in the country is rude and preoccupied with themselves.

ALL my pictures? That'd be like the slide show from hell or something. Except since it's on the internet you can just stop paying attention whenever. But I've gone through 17 rolls of film already (not counting what's on my digital camera), and my trip isn't even half over yet! (I know, I know, I need to slow down....but photography is sort of a mini-hobby of mine, so I am always looking for interesting and intriguing shots. The way I look at it is I would rather take 3 pictures of something and get one really good one, than just take one mediocre shot.) Anyhoo, it's probably going to take awhile to get the pictures too, because I am not going to walk into the photo shop with like 50 rolls of film to be developed at once. I'm gonna take it in little batches. So I'm sure I'll have pictures to show you all like all summer!

Anyhoo, I guess I should say bye to you all now, since I have the feeling this luxury of free internet access is going to end tomorrow when I leave the Netherlands. I'm sort of sad to be leaving here, I love it here. The Netherlands could be my second home. And yet, I'm not overly sad, because I am absolutely positive I will come back someday And, of course, there's still lots of adventures left on this trip! Germany, Luxembourg,Paris, and Scotland to go!!
