She actually seemed good at both. She was good with Julie and Barbara, but she was also good with Alex. I think she was better with the girls, but this could be because she raised them from birth. Julie and Barbara were hers from day one, as newborns. Alex came to her as a young teenager. He had already been shaped by his parents in his early years. Still, she adjusted to raising a boy pretty well. Also, Ann was good with Bob too when he asked her for advice.
I think that if Ann and Ed had had boys instead that they would have been good parents to them too. I say overall that they were better with the girls though. Also, if she had teenage sons, I wonder if they would have stayed with Ed after the divorce? Probably would have been more likely. |

Maybe if they had boys they would have preferred to remain with their father and SHE would have been the one left out in the cold... But I think that considering everything she did her best with Alex. Taking him in when his own mother couldn't be bothered. |

IMO
I just think she got VERY lucky with Barbara winding up needing next to zero discipline or maintenance. Ann somewhat blew it with Julie and Alex. Worst of all, she couldn't have been bothered to try to help care for her own namesake granddaughter after the poor baby had been abandoned by Julie.

She was not a good Mother. Look at how Julie turned out?
