Default Adamantium's "Spider-Man" (2002) Mini Review

I’m going to watch all five Spider-Man movies before seeing the new one (which, I won’t lie, may have to wait until it comes out on blu-ray). It’s been a while since I’ve seen the original trilogy, and I only saw the first “Amazing Spider-Man” once - when it came to blu-ray. I’ve never seen the second.

I just finished watching “Spider-Man” from 2002. It starred Tobey Maguire as Peter Parker / Spider-Man, and it’s a great film. The main thing I love about this movie is its heart. You get to root for the underdog in this film. I care about Parker and want to see him “get the girl.” When I first saw this back in theaters, I had two complaints. One is that Tobey just came off as weak, even as Spider-Man. I’m not talking physically, but rather with his speech. But then, I’m a fan of the ‘90s animated series, and that Spider-Man had a much stronger sounding voice (thanks to voice actor Christopher Daniel Barnes). Also, Spidey’s sense of humor wasn’t the best, but at least he tried. The second thing I disliked back in the day is the outfit for Green Goblin. They couldn’t have found a better actor to portray Norman Osbourne, than Willem Dafoe, but his costume was horrendous. While I still find Maguire’s delivery as Spider-Man weak, and I’m not loving Goblin’s outfit, I realize I’m over those two points. They’re both fine to me now. It’s a fun superhero flick. Not too gritty. It didn’t take itself too seriously. There’s plenty of humor, action, romance and drama. I’m not gonna lie. Some parts are just corny, but I tend to like those moments. After all, it’s the story of a teenage boy who gets bitten by a genetically-altered spider, is given the powers of that spider, dresses up in a costume and fights super villains.

Anyways, I love this movie just like I did back when I was 21-years-old. Tomorrow I’ll try and watch “Spider-Man 2”, which I recall enjoying more than the first, thanks to Doctor Octopus being the villain. In fact, the sequel is the thing that inspired me to create my own superhero, Masked Bagger. But more on that when I “review” that film.
