Default Do you think they ruined Julie's character just to get back at Mackenzie?

The writers and producers totally ruined Julie's character by having her abandon her husband and child. Do you think this was done because they were mad at Mackenzie for being on drugs? Perhaps they felt that Mackenzie had abandoned the show, so they might as well have her character Julie do the same thing. Either way, I think it was a big mistake. Julie would have never abandoned her family. If they wanted to imitate real life, they could have had Julie be a drug addict and have to go into treatment. This would have explained her absence. In fact, Julie on drugs would have been a good plot line. Instead, they totally destroyed her character. In fact, for me, the last season of ODAAT doesn't even exist. I pretty much stop after Barbara's wedding.

Well as you can see by my avatar !! I LOVE MAX!!!!!!! So Season 5, 7, 8 and 9 are actually my favorites! Due to Mack's being let go the first time, Michael/Max wasn't able to be in Season 6 at all! I also like the first few Seasons too! I'm a big fan of the show! But IMO if Max (and Mark) Barbara's Hubby hadn't been brought in, the show would have really went down hill! It was getting a little stale as Ann was becoming more career successful and the girls were getting older! The Sons in law REALLY breathed new life into the show IMO!!! Esp. my Max!!!! I LOVE the guy!!!!

But back to your question! Yeah I kind of think they did! The writers were very callous to Mack!! She had enough problems and to make her character (Julie) look really bad too wasn't very nice and it does seem maybe it was done on purpose!!!

IDK if drug problems would have been a good story line for Julie's absence!!?? I think as skinny as she was becoming, maybe they could have had a story line that she was suffering from Anorexia and was out of town at a facility getting help for that! Around that time Anorexia was just becoming known! I think that really would have worked! Julie leaving her Baby and Husband was so harsh! And no I really don't think Julie would leave her baby, her Hubby yeah but not her Baby!!

I was really glad though that Michael/Max was able to stay in the show in Season 9! Had it been they just were both let go and supposed to move away, as that would have been nice for Mack/Julie it wouldn't have been good for me!

Lol, actually I never cared for either of the son-in-laws. I wish that Julie had married Chuck, and Barbara had married Bob.

Awww!!! Max is the man of my dreams! I LOVE him with ALL MY And I love Mark too , in a Brother in law kind of way!

I LOVE Bob, he was such a sweet heart! But he and Barbara were really good buddies!! I didn't see them as being married. And Chuck , he was OK but nah. Not Husband material for Julie!

Now the one I REALLY thought would have been good for Julie, and he didn't play a boyfriend! One time (I think Season 4?) Jay Leno guest starred as a guy she met at a free clinic! He was so funny, and I thought they had chemistry together and would have made a great boyfriend/Husband for Julie! Back than he was pretty much unknown. I think he would have been a GREAT addition to the cast!!

But than Michael Lembeck/Max wouldn't have been brought in!! Unless he could have been a love interest/ future Husband for Barbara or something? Or a sexy new neighbor??

Speaking of Jay Leno!! He's guest starring on Alice right now!!! That's funny that I just brought him up in my last post, huh? It's like kind of eerie almost!!

I LOVE Jay, he's funny! He's playing an outlaw biker guy on Alice along with Ron Palillo , Horshack from Welcome back Kotter !!!

Just remember, all Mac had to do was stay clean and not screw up for just 21 episodes - she only barely made it through 3.

Mac in season 9 is hardly the same caliber of the one who was in "Runaways" or "The Older Man". Her best performances in the series. The Network gave her the multi-part season opener two years in a row!

I know that all she had to do was stay clean, but that's easier said than done. She was in a bad place. I think they should have had the Julie character either on drugs or anorexic or something that would have explained her absence. In a way, doing that to Julie's character also hurt Ann's character. It made Ann seem like a failure as a mother.

After hearing about everything that happened with her father it's a wonder she was as good on the show as she was. She had a lot of demons to overcome. I loved Mack on the show. Although I had a crush on Valerie the best seasons IMO were the earlier ones. I liked the later ones too but it just seemed like something was missing.

Totally agree. I think that Mack brought an energy, and an edge to the show that really never was there after she left. She was a source of conflict, and when you lose that, you really lose a lot from a show. It's my main beef against continuing AITF without Rob and Sally.
