Lucy Goes Duck Hunting - Sitcoms Online Message Boards

I've been watching the Lucy Show again once a week since I finished up with watching all of I Love Lucy. Today I saw "Lucy Goes Duck Hunting" from the 2nd season, when it was shown in beautiful living color!

Well, the point is that as I watched this episode it reminded me of the first season of the Lucy Show, first ALL the kids were back in the show, so far in the second season the kids have been missing except for one episode with the appearance of one of them the little boy. So seeing my favorite Candy Moore in COLOR

was a thrill since this was her first appearance (finally) in season 2. Also there was Viv's boyfriend again (from Season 1) making an appearance (he also hasn't been seen in season 2 up till now) and he was in color now too, though I didn't get a thrill up my leg from him.

THEN I discovered why this show reminded me so of the higher quality Season 1 episodes, it was filmed only one month after the Season 1 shows wrapped up, it was the first 2nd season episode filmed before the whole show went on a real summer break of 3 months. When the rest of Season 2 filming restarted a few months later gone forevermore was Viv's boyfriend and (so far at least) gone is Candy Moore and Viv's kid. Maybe they'll finally come back later this season, but so far all the kids and Viv's boyfriend have only been seen in this first 2nd season episode filmed right after the final 1st season episode filming. BUT it was not shown until the sixth episode in the actual broadcast order. Anyway I felt good realizing there was good reason behind why I only felt that this was just like a season 1 episode, it was still a season 1 style program with all the season 1 regulars

If you like Candy Moore she also played Jeff's girlfriend in several Donna Reed Show episodes.

By the way I busted out laughing on the comment: though I didn't get a thrill up my leg from him. You must be a fan of Chris Matthews!

I think all the Danfield Lucys are better than the California Lucys. The first season is particularly good--a few classic episodes there. After she moved to Calif. it was like she had no kids--she even gave a wrong name for one of them in an episode (I think she called him Jimmy instead of Jerry--Jimmy is his real first name).

The color episodes really showed Viv's kid's blond hair, and Candy's...the boy's looked almost bleached blond.

Yeah, I discovered that a couple months ago, I saw Candy on the Donna Reed Show and was pleasantly surprised. If you’re watching the My 3 Sons ME TV broadcasts now (the b/w years) you’ll be pleasantly surprised when you see Candy in a near future episode when she appears in the woods(!) hiking at the time when Mike is up in the look-out box looking for forest fires. No fire, just hot Candy.

Donna Reed Show is one of those shows from the ‘60’s I had never seen before (except for an occasional episode) and for the past several years, once a week, I’ve been watching the first 5 seasons of Donna’s show. When Nick At Nite showed it 20 years ago I chose not to record it and I’ve been kicking myself ever since then that I missed my chance then to get it. BUT when ME TV came to light and they showed Donna Reed I jumped at the chance to finally get it recorded. Just this week I watched my final Donna Reed episode, it took almost 4 years to see them all (once a week) I finally watched the last one Monday. Kind of sad now that there are no more to see, will have to think of another new (old) TV show now to take it’s Monday slot’s place. Would be very nice if Seasons 6 & 7 were released onto DVD.

She also played the Cleavers' maid in an episode of Leave It to Beaver. Wally had a crush on her. I saw her at a Lucy Convention in Burbank back in 2000 or 2001. She was there with her then teenage daughter and she looked fantastic. There was a lot of whispering and murmuring about how beautiful she still looked after all those years. And she came across as a genuinely nice person. It would be nice to know why the producers/Lucy decided to switch the location of the show. I generally don't like it when sitcoms make big moves and coincidentally all the major characters decide to go, too. (One could say, what would Lucy be without Mr. Mooney? I'd say the same about Viv and the kids...)

Lucy was planning to drop the series altogether when Vivian left the show. She had done a pilot in 1964 for a potential new series (when Vivian was initially planning to depart the series before being talked in to one more season); it aired as a special and guest starred Bob Hope. Lucille Ball played a fictionalized version of herself. But a couple things happened: CBS wanted to continue with The Lucy Show format, and also Desilu officials felt the series needed to complete 100 episodes in order to be viable for syndicated reruns. By the end of the 1964-65 season, only 84 episodes were in the can. So it needed to run at least another year. By the third season, the kids on the show had essentially already been written out anyway as the show show had become entirely Lucy/Viv or Lucy/Mooney focused, so officially writing them out of the show the next season wasn't a major change in format.

With Vivian departing the series with just Ball and Gordon continuing, there needed to be some change to bring fresh ideas for script ideas. It's hard to imagine what they could have come up with if it was only Lucy and Mooney still in Danfield. A Los Angeles/Hollywood setting would open up more script possibilities. Maury Thompson and Tommy Thompson conceived of the idea of Lucy and Mooney both moving to California and presented the idea to Lucille Ball. She liked thought it was a funny concept and a good way to keep the series going, which would make both CBS and Desilu officials happy. Tommy Thompson was promoted to producer and Maury Thompson was promoted to director.

It's so, so silly to label all democrats, all republicans, all women, all men, all dogs, all cats, etc. as acting or being the same because they are in a group. The statements do not mean anything, as there is no substance to them. People have gone on and on, mentioning these same complaints about Republicans. (Republicans and Democrats accusing each other of the same negative things) It's still the same nonsense over and over.

Let's get back to Lucy, that is why we are here.

On another forum, I found that the best thing to do when someone gets riled over politics (rather than to "confront" them) is to try to take the discussion back on topic. Many of us have strong political views, but we're never going to change anyone's mind, at least not here.

Anyway, back on topic--I haven't seen this Duck Hunting episode in quite awhile. I'm wondering if this is the one that had the really phony looking scenery. Multi camera shows like Lucy usually don't do too well trying to create an outdoor look.

Yep, it did have bad scenery. There was a camping one, too, and that was also completely filmed on the soundstage.

The "outdoor" scenes didn't look too bad in B&W, but when they went to color, they looked really cheesy. Same thing happened with Gunsmoke - the outdoor Dodge City "set" didn't look bad in the early ones, but looked phony in color.
