TV ABC Orders Series Where Today's Stars Spoof Classic Sitcoms

Jimmy Kimmel and Justin Theroux To Make Fun of Classic Sitcoms for ABC
by Megan Vick
May 16, 2017

Live TV events are typically reserved for sports, awards shows and a new wave of musicals, but ABC thinks that two guys making fun of old TV shows works, too.

The network announced that a live sitcom special from Jimmy Kimmel and Justin Theroux (The Leftovers) is in development and planned for the 2017-18 season. The event will see top actors of today acting out scripts of classic sitcoms from the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s.

"Think Kevin Hart saying, 'Whatchoo talkin' 'bout, Willis?'," ABC president Channing Dungey said during ABC's upfronts presentation, where the project was announced.

"I spent most of my childhood in front of a TV set, obsessively watching comedies from great producers like Norman Lear, Jim Burrows, James L. Brooks and Garry Marshall," said Kimmel. "This is a way for a new generation of viewers to discover these classics and a new generation of actors to play characters they love, live in front of a studio audience."

ABC hasn't released a list of participating stars or a premiere date yet.

Reminds me of the short-lived The Rerun Show.

If it's anything like that Wayans Bros. show where they take off on Good Times, I'm in. That was LOL funny.

This isn't a good idea IMO, Jimmy and Dungey. If you want to get the newer generation to watch and be familiar with the shows, instead of spoofing and making fun of them why not do what CBS did with I love Lucy and show episodes of the original classic shows? I'll watch it but I really don't think this is going to turn out good. Really not happy with Dungey/ABC at this point right now and that's all I can really say about it.

"...and it will be funny because those old guys didn't have internet or cell phones...and their cars were HUUUUGE...."

Nope, not interested. This seems like those people who look at their old yearbooks and gasp, "Look at that hair!", as if somehow people were supposed to magically realize that their hairstyles would seem silly decades later. Newsflash: everything goes out of style. The cool stuff today will look idiotic 30 years from now (well, most of it does today to me, but that's another story )
