"The Handmaid's Tale" will return for a second season, Hulu CEO Mike Hopkins announced during the streaming platform's upfront presentation to advertisers Wednesday.

The series, which premiered April 26, had the largest premiere in Hulu history.



"The response we've seen to The Handmaid's Tale in just one week since its premiere has been absolutely incredible. It has been an honor to work with this talented team of cast and creators to develop a series that has struck such a chord with audiences across the country," Hulu's Head of Content Craig Erwich said in a statement.

"As we continue to expand our strong slate of original programming, The Handmaid's Tale is exactly the type of gripping and thought-provoking storytelling we want to bring to viewers. We can't wait to explore the world of Gilead and continue Margaret's vision with another season on Hulu."



The series, based on Margaret Atwood's 1985 novel, follows the the journey of Offred (Elisabeth Moss), a slave in the home of a high-ranking government official in a dystopian post-America called Gilead.

A return date has not yet been made.

Hulu said it has surpassed 20 million U.S. subscribers, a milestone that shows its commitment to original programming is paying dividends.

The video streaming service announced the latest subscriber numbers during today’s NewFront presentation at the newly christened Hulu Theater at Madison Square Garden, where executives also announced that its flagship original series "The Handmaid’s Tale" has been renewed for a third season, in addition to unveiling new series and exclusive deals including its first multi-year pact with DreamWorks Animation.

The Lord giveth, and He taketh away: "The Handmaid’s Tale" has been renewed for Season 6, which also will be its last hurrah.

Hulu announced the dystopian drama’s fate Thursday at the Season 5 premiere event, which took place at the Toronto International Film Festival.

In addition, the streamer confirmed that Handmaid’s showrunner Bruce Miller is “actively developing” a sequel series, based on Margaret Atwood’s novel The Testaments, that picks up years after the events of the original show.

Update on "The Handmaid's Tale's" 6th & Final Season

We’re learning more about the upcoming sixth and final season of "The Handmaid’s Tale".

The final chapter of the Emmy-winning Hulu series originally was to begin production in 2023 for a fall 2024 premiere, but that schedule, of course, was delayed by the strikes.



In an interview with Deadline, Disney Television Group President Craig Erwich, who oversees content for Hulu Originals, said the sixth season now is set to begin production this summer for premiere in 2025.

The series was renewed for its sixth and final season in September 2022, just ahead of its Season 5 premiere.
