One of the most memorable recurring characters on "Good Times" during its six-season run was J.J.'s buddy Poppo, played by actor Randolph "Randy" Martin. Poppo first appeared in season five, along with J.J.'s two other pals, Cool Breeze (Larry Anthony Beecham) and Head (T.K. Carter); together, they formed the clique "The Awesome Foursome" (though it was reduced to "The Gleesome Threesome" due to Cool Breeze's absence; apparently, Larry Anthony Beecham had a substance abuse problem and was unable to participate).
A running gag during Poppo's two appearances on "Good Times" (he appeared in "Wheels" and "J.J. and the Boss' Daughter") involved Poppo putting the moves on J.J.'s sister Thelma (in an unsuccessful attempt to court her) and Thelma always brushed him off. My question is: Whatever happened to Randolph "Randy" Martin? Even though he had guest-star roles on "The Streets Of San Francisco," "Baretta," "Harry O," and "What's Happening!!," it seems like he disappeared from the face of the Earth. It would've been terrific to see Poppo (as well as Cool Breeze and Head) appear in subsequent episodes; perhaps Thelma might've accepted Poppo's offer and agreed to go on a date with him after all. Drop me a line...I'd love to hear from you! Enjoy your day! |

Looks like he started doing Film after 1978 instead of sitcoms. Been out of the Film and TV business since 1987
