Default Cher and other "disliked" celeberties

Years ago, it must have been roughly from late 1970s to early 1980s, I read a
newspaper columnist's comment (it might have been Flip Bondy if you are familiar with him) in which he said that Cher must have sold her soul to the Devil because there is no other reason why she is famous since she has no talent.

Cher, back then , was famous for being an outlandish "diva" and now I hear that she is termed "The Goddess of Pop" but her music would largely be considered dreck today and even during her heyday it was considered dreck.

She does have a very distinct voice, just like Karen Carpenter did.
Of course I have heard people say that anything by The Carpenters is really dreck and Karen Carpenter's legacy actually is that she is the first celebrity to die of Anorexia.

Also Mariah Carey has become a reference point for untalented and over-rated celebrity. But I have also heard that Mariah Carey is in the Guiness Book of World Record because she can hit notes that few or no other singer can hit.
Is it just that she has not yet been paired up with the right singing material?

I have also heard that Billy Joel's music is dreck.

Justin Beiber seems to overall embody the "disliked" celebrity and it has been that way for several years.
I'm of a different generation and I know that teen idols such as David Cassidy and Donny Osmond were disliked because they had too much publicity in their day and were considered to have low talent, but in the modern day and age of the internet, Justin Beiber has probably become the first major celebrity who is the target of internet trolls.

Also re another celebrity, Danika Patrick is not a singer or dancer, but a race car driver. It seems to me that she has become the "Justin Beiber" of the sports world because she is considered to be overrated and given more publicity than she deserves because her sports accomplishments are not significant at all.

Anyone think that Cher never had talent? What about her former husband, Sonny?
Is their music dreck?

Is the music of Mariah Carey dreck? Billy Joel too?
Are The Carpenter's music horrible? Does Richard Carpenter have any music writing talent?

Is Danika Patrick just an over-marketed sports celebrity who never contributed that significantly to sports history? Is Serena Williams too?
Is the mostly-forgotten Babe Didrikson Zaharias the only female sports star who is deserving of a name in history?

Thoughts?

Well, I like a lot of his songs too. (I really don't care much for "Brenda and Eddie" though, not really the tune, the meaning).
But I find it amazing how a lot of songs and musicians are put in a category of "popular but frivolous and garbage."

Cher had a few good songs on the charts in the 1970's.

The Carpenters were big hitmakers from 1970 till about 1977.

Billy Joel hit the charts in the late 1970's with several good tunes.

Nothing to dislike there in my opinion.

Plenty of room for all of them.

I wouldn't really consider these disliked celebrities. Although I'm not a fan, Justin Bieber obviously has a ton of fans who are keeping his career going and selling out arenas.

Even though it's always a personal opinion, to imply that Cher and Mariah Carey have no talent is just insane in my opinion. Both of them have insane amounts of talent, just in different areas. Cher can put on a live show like no other and also has an incredible amount of acting ability.

I haven't been a big fan of the music she's put out in the past five or so years, but Mariah is extraordinarily talented. The Beatles are the only artists who have had more #1 singles on Billboard than Mariah. She is in the number two spot and rightfully so.

Today's most overrated musicians are Justin Bieber, Miley Cyrus, Kanye West, and Beyonce.
