During "Sanford and Son's" fifth season (1975-76), a new character was introduced on the series. His name was George "G.F." Hutton, but his nickname was Hutch. Hutch made his debut in the episode "The Sanford Arms," in which Fred and Lamont scrambled to find tenants for their new boarding house (a house previously owned by their former next-door neighbor, Julio Fuentes [Gregory Sierra]) to avoid foreclosure.
Actor Arnold Johnson played Hutch for five episodes during season five, and he delivered a capable performance. I couldn't help but notice the similarities between Hutch and another of Fred's pals, Grady Wilson (Whitman Mayo)...both Hutch and Grady were elderly black men with beards. My question is this: Was Hutch a temporary replacement for Grady? I know that Whitman Mayo was starring on his short-lived spin-off "Grady" during late 1975 and early 1976, so perhaps Hutch was a substitute pal for Grady. Drop me a line...I'd love to hear from you! Enjoy your evening! |
