"Beauty and the Beast" Delivers a Record-Setting $170 Million Opening

Disney's live-action remake of Beauty and the Beast has delivered a film the size of a summer blockbuster in the month of March, debuting with not only a record-setting March opening weekend, but the seventh largest domestic opening of all-time as Disney now owns six of the top seven opening weekends of all-time.

Thanks in large part to Beauty and the Beast's opening, but also to the continued strong performances from Logan, Get Out and a decent hold from Kong: Skull Island, this weekend's top twelve grossed a combined $249.5 million, the largest combined top twelve since December 2015 when Star Wars: The Force Awakens hit theaters.







With an estimated $170 million, Beauty and the Beast topped the previous March opening weekend record of $166 million set by Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice just last year. It's also the seventh largest opening weekend ever, ahead of the $169.1 million opening for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2 and just behind Iron Man 3's $174.1 million opening from May of 2013. It's also the largest opening for a PG-rated film, topping Finding Dory's previous record of $135 million, as well as the largest Spring opening weekend, fourth largest Saturday gross of all-time, sixth largest Sunday gross and eighth largest theater average for a wide opening release.



The film also set records in IMAX, delivering the #1 global and domestic openings for a PG-rated film in the IMAX format. Beauty and the Beast's estimated $21 million on 1,026 IMAX screens in 56 markets worldwide pushed the company past the $6 billion mark in total global box office since the inception of the DMR process with Apollo 13: The IMAX Experience in 2002.

Internationally, Beauty and the Beast delivered an estimated $180 million from 44 material markets for an estimated $350 million global opening (#14 all-time).







In second position, WB and Legendary's Kong: Skull Island brought in an estimated $28.85 million, dropping 53% from its solid opening weekend last week, bringing its domestic cume just over $110 million after ten days in release.

Additionally, the film added another $38.5 million internationally this weekend as its global cume now stands at $259.3 million.







Third belongs to Fox's Logan, which brought in an estimated $17.5 million as its domestic cume is now just shy of $185 million.

Internationally, Logan added another $31.5 million this weekend bringing its worldwide cume to $524.1 million, as it remains the #1 worldwide release of 2017.







Universal's Get Out finished fourth with an estimated $13.2 million as its domestic cume now stands at $133 million. The thriller from Jordan Peele also made its international debut this weekend in nine markets where it brought in an estimated $2.9 million. Of those releases it brought in an estimated $2.6 million in the UK for a third place finish.

Rounding out the top five was Lionsgate's The Shack with an estimated $6.1 million as its cume now stands at $42.6 million.







The only other new wide release for the weekend was BH Tilt's The Belko Experiment, which fell just a bit shy of Mojo's weekend projection, but managed to meet the studio's target number, delivering an estimated $4 million for the weekend from 1,341 theaters.

It's the second largest opening for a BH Tilt title.







Elsewhere, Hidden Figures topped $165 million domestically as it added another $1.5 million, the Weinstein's Lion topped $50 million domestically after adding an estimated $784k and La La Land is now just shy of $150 million domestically after bringing in an estimated $530k this weekend.

In limited release, TriStar debuted T2 Trainspotting in five theaters where it brought in an estimated $180,000 ($36,000 PTA). The film, which was made on a $18 million budget ($14 million after rebates) will continue to expand over the coming weeks.

Broad Green's release of Terence Malick's Song to Song debuted in four theaters this weekend and brought in an estimated $53,945 ($13,486 PTA) and Music Box released Frantz into two theaters where it brought in an estimated $18,500 ($9,250 PTA).

The animated version of Beauty And The Beast was the first movie I got to see in the theater and when I first heard about the live action version I was surprised and shocked that Disney decided to do it. From what i've heard about Disney's Beauty And The Beast it looks really beautiful and very well done. Another fact that I learned about this version of Beauty And The Beast that Mom told me is that the movie features a computerized Beast character and I think that will be the high point of the movie. Another thing I find surprising is that they cast Kevin Kline in the role of Maurice and as you recall in the animated version Maurice LOVES to invent things and in this version of Beauty And The Beast they brought that side of Maurice to life and the relationship with Belle and Maurice is just like all daughters have with their fathers. I also am happy to see Josh Gad in this movie because he has come a long way since voicing the character Olaf in Frozen he is a good luck charm for Disney. So I think Beauty And The Beast will be a huge hit and one movie i'll probably buy on DVD when it is released

Disney's Beauty Delivers Beastly Second Weekend, While Power Rangers Opens with $40.5M

Disney's Beauty and the Beast delivered a monster second weekend, pulling in enough to make it the fourth largest second weekend of all-time and pushing the film over $315 million in a matter of just ten days.

Added to that, Lionsgate's release of Saban's Power Rangers debuted in second place and proved there was still an audience for the franchise that began in the early '90s.

Meanwhile, Sony's Life didn't show much of it and WB's CHiPs finished mostly as expected, settling in the lower half of the weekend top ten. All that said, it was a great weekend at the domestic box office with the top twelve delivering $192.3 million a 63% improvement over the same weekend last year.







With an estimated $88.3 million, Disney's Beauty and the Beast finished atop the box office for a second weekend in a row. It's the fourth largest second weekend of all-time and pushes the film's domestic cume over of $315 million, one of the fastest films to ever hit that mark.

That said, rival studios are estimating the film may have topped $90 million this weekend, which would be consistent with the film over performing by $4.7 million compared to estimates last weekend. We'll have to wait for actuals tomorrow afternoon to see how everything shakes out.

In addition to its domestic performance, Beauty and the Beast continued its outstanding run internationally adding an estimated $119.2 million overseas bringing its worldwide cume to $690.3 million.







Finishing in second place is Lionsgate's release of Saban's Power Rangers, which brought in an estimated $40.5 million from 3,693 locations. This result finds the film delivering in the high end of pre-release tracking and opening day audiences showed they enjoyed what they saw, scoring it with an "A" CinemaScore.

Of that audience 30% were under the age of 18 and gave the film an "A+" CinemaScore. Further demographic breakdown saw the audience made up of 60% male moviegoers vs. 40% female, of which 50% of the audience was over the age of 25.

Internationally, Power Rangers debuted in 62 markets and delivered an estimated $18.7 million for a $59.2 million worldwide debut.







WB's Kong: Skull Island finished third with an estimated $14.4 million, a 48% drop that brings the film's cume to $133.5 million as it kicks off its third week in release.

In addition to its domestic performance, Kong debuted in China this weekend where it brought in an estimated $72.1 million as its international cume now stands at $258.6 million for a worldwide total just shy of $400 million.







Finishing in fourth is the second new wide release of the weekend, Sony's R-rated sci-fi thriller Life, which could only muster an estimated $12.6 million for the three-day. This is below Mojo's forecast, but awfully close to the $13.3 million Chappie started with back in March 2015.

The film was a little less popular with opening day audiences than Chappie, however, as it scored a disappointing "C+" CinemaScore, which doesn't bode well for its future prospects. Opening weekend audience breakdown was 55% male vs. 45% female, of which 43% were under the age of 25.

Outside the US and Canada, Life debuted in 56 international markets and pulled in an estimated $16.1 million.







Rounding out the top five is Fox's Logan, which brought in an estimated $10.1 million, pushing its domestic cume over $200 million.

Internationally, Logan added an estimated $12 million bringing its worldwide cume to $565.5 million, placing second on the worldwide chart for 2017 behind Beauty and the Beast.







Outside the top five, Warner Bros.'s release of the R-rated TV adaptation CHiPs failed to generate much interest as it brought in an estimated $7.6 million from 2,464 theaters ($3,084 PTA).

The film scored a "B-" CinemaScore and may struggle to even reach $20 million once all is said and done. The audience breakdown was 53% male vs. 47% female, of which 68% were over the age of 25.

Internationally, CHiPs debuted in 31 markets and pulled in an estimated $1.9 million, led by a $248,000 weekend in the UK.







Outside the top ten, RiverRun's release of Slamma Jamma debuted with an estimated $1.68 million from 502 theaters, Fox Searchight's Wilson opened in 310 theaters with an estimated $330,000 and FIP's Phillauri opened with $265,000 from 74 theaters.
