This is an excerpt from a 1974 interview with Ann Sothern by James Bowden. It can be found in the Fall 2016 issue of Films of the Golden Age (#86) in the article "Ann Sothern : The Smartest Girl in Town."
Ann Sothern: We shot an episode in three days then took the rest of the week off. I was still in a weakened state and wanted to maintain a certain quality. Eventually there were quarrels with Jack about the outside work I could take so in 1957 I sold the reruns--all 108 half hours--to syndication. I got 42% of the profits which was over $1 million. They re-titled the reruns Susie and it rain daytime slots for years and years. Reruns were just being born! (Note: Ann was in "a weakened state" due to hepatitis. "Jack" was MGM producer Jack Chertok who became the executive producer of Private Secretary). You can order this magazine from filmsofthegoldenage.com. |
