I think this original version of the Squares is great. I was born in 1980, so I completely missed this version when it was on. The first version I ever saw was the John Davidson revival from 1986-89.
One reason why I like this version is because during the time the show was on, there were more things they couldn't say on TV. Yesterday, on the 2:30 p.m. episode, Peter Marshall asked Paul Lynde a question. The question was about this story where a man walks into a dark room and encounters another man and what he did to the other man. Now, everyone knows what he might have been thinking. But he just sits and pauses, then gives a real answer, which was wrong. The real answer was that the man pushed the other man down a flight of stairs. I like the current version. Tom Bergeron is an excellent host and the show is still very entertaining. But it can get a little bit raunchy for a show that airs during the day in many places. I think it'll be interesting to see what happens with current HS next year when Whoopi, Bruce, and Caroline are out of the squares and Henry "The Fonz" Winkler takes over as executive producer. |

I agree- classic squares is great! This is the first time around for me too, and I'm loving this show. The stars are hilarious, Peter Marshall is a great host, and like you said, it's not so raunchy.

It's the first time for me also!
Paul Lynde is the bomb! You know that you're guaranteed a good laugh on each show. Charley Weaver & Wally Cox also rule. |

I grew up in the 60s and 70s, and watched this show all the time...and loved it!! We'd watch the nighttime version, and would watch the daytime show (11:30 am EST) during summer vacation or if we were home sick from school...
For the last several years I have wondered why this show wasn't being brought back to the Game Show Network...then I heard (sometime last year) that every one of the 3000+ episodes had been erased or destroyed by NBC...and I was not a happy camper when I heard that...but now that many episodes have been "found", I'm really glad that a new generation of fans get to see what a great and fun show this was...Our whole family could watch it, and we would just have a blast at the comments of Paul Lynde (especially), Rose Marie, Jan Murray, Wally Cox, etc... I don't think that today's version is as good...for one thing, today's "stars" are so over-exposed that it's no big deal to see them on H.S, since we've already seen them profiled on the "E True Hollywood Story", and "Entertainment Tonight" as well as Oprah and Rosie and Leno and Letterman... Back in the 60s and 70s, celebrities weren't shoved down our throats as much as they are now, so it was a treat to see your favorite stars on Hollywood Squares... But anyway, enough ramblings from this old guy here...like I said, I'm glad that today's younger generation can enjoy the original Hollywood Squares. TV the way it oughta be ![]() BTW, the next thing Game Show Network ought to bring back is the original "Jeopardy" hosted by Art Fleming...for you young folks out there, "Jeopardy" started out in the 60's, and back then they had to manually slide up the dollar amount cards to reveal the "answers" (just like they do on the Saturday Night Live spoofs they do nowadays)... I'd love to see that show again to see if the questions were actually as difficult as I remember, or did they just SEEM difficult because I was like 10 or 11 years old when it was on... The other quiz show I'd like to see come back is the "Who, What or Where Game"...but that's another story for another post...W.W.orW. was an excellent show as well. |

I am so loving this! I keep getting lucky and seeing my favorite stars on HS!! First Kent McCord was on, then George Maharis, then finally, last night, Marty Milner was on. I LOVE this show!
