Sad Simpsons nearing the end???

Oh No! The End for 'The Simpsons'?

By Cathryn Conroy, CompuServe News Editor

Could that staple of American pop culture be near its end? "The Simpsons" creator Matt Groening came close to saying just that when he was in Bristol, England last weekend. This is what he told the UK Financial Times. You interpret what it means. "It becomes increasingly difficult as the years go by to keep on not only surprising the audience, but surprising ourselves. I think we are closer to winding it up. Although what happens generally if we win the Emmy for best animation show is that that gives us another couple of years to run it into the ground."

It has been 13 years since the show premiered as a stand-alone series. In those early days, it drew a great deal of criticism, particularly from the Christian right. Now it's a hugely popular international phenomenon, playing to millions of people in 60 countries. This is how big it is: It has exceeded "Baywatch." And the suits at Fox, the network on which "The Simpsons" is broadcast, couldn't be happier with Homer's cash cow. "I think Fox will wring every last penny out of the show before they call it a day," Groening told the Financial Times. "I have made them billions of dollars, so there is a trace of a smile in their faces when I walk into the room," he says. So what will Groening do next? He admits "The Simpsons" will be a tough act to follow, saying he feels like Paul McCartney after the break-up of the Beatles. The fans may feel the same way.

What do you guys think?

Cool

As much as I adore The Simpsons, I think it's time for it to end. It has become a shadow of its former self. It's almost embarrassing to watch at times.

Sad Well, you know what they say...

...about all good things!

But it's certainly some disheartening news.

I'm SURE they'll be going out with a bang though!

How 'bout an episode where they've all reached the age they would be AFTER 13 years?

Anyway...it oughta be a good one!

BTW...do you know how Matt Groening signs his 'work'. Take a good look at Homer's hair and ears next time...there's an 'M' and 'G' right there on his HEAD!

I just read on AOL that The Simpsons are going to be around forever.
Matt Groening has stated today that his quotes article in the UK Financial Times were taken out of context, and the has no plans to bring the Simpsons to a close any time soon.

Good news for the fans, bad news for the few who think that maybe after 12 years, it's time for them to pack it in.

I read about the article in the paper this morning, and it sounds like there is a shred of truth in the things Mr. Groening said. Plus, he also expresses anger at FOX for the shoddy treatment they have given his other baby "Futurama."

Groening is probably denying the things he said in the article to save face with the FOX execs who probably went ballistic over the article.

SIMPSONS is my favorite show but even I have to admitt the last season has been the weakest.Do I have any ideas how they can re-vamp it?Sadly,no.
If it does end its run though I hope they'll at least do an occasional "special".Remember before the show came out they had the Christmas special? That would be cool if they had holiday specials a la Charlie Brown.

It may not be as good as it once was, but IMO it's still one of the best shows on TV.

It's still better than other shows that are on, and it's still the best show on FOX, along with Family Guy.

That article was made three years ago. The Simpsons just finished its 16th year. The show is currently renewed thru the 2006-07 season.

I read a magazine interview with Matt Groening talking about the 350th episode airing here in the UK and he said that there is no end in sight.

I really think that they should consider calling time on it now, it has become a shadow of what it once was.

I don't blame him.

FOX didn't give the show a chance to GROW!

I adored Futurama very much.

Good news........they are working on a new direct to DVD movie in the works.
