Don't know about if it should get praised or not. Gomer gets to stay in the a quonset hut for years while all his buddies get sent over to Vietnam. That alone puts a damper on the show.

Gomer Pyle is a classic. The above Vietnam comment is ludicrous, might as well complain that there's no such thing as talking horses or genies, or witches.
