I remember TV Land airing an episode of this many moons ago.

I remember Bridget Loves Bernie. Sandwiched between All in the Family and The Mary Tyler Moore Show, the show got high ratings but it was cancelled due to pressure from religious groups. But good things came for David Birney and Meredith Baxter, they got married in real life.

Yes I remember seeing it when it was in production. Haven't seen it since. I think back to the actors in the show you went further on. Audrey Linley went to Threes Company, Harold Stone was in the earlier show, The Goldbergs David Doyle, Charlies Angels, and Meredith to Family and Family Ties.

Is it because the two major players were Jewish?

As I recall, it was because the show was about the mixed religion marriage of a Jewish man and a Catholic woman, and it dealt with a lot of religious issues. I think there were complaints about stereotypes.

I remember it well; my family watched it every week it was on and enjoyed it.

I totally remember this show. I was pretty young and I remember my mom telling me it was cancelled. I was so sad. Meredith and David were extra pretty.

This is the only contemporary article about the controversy that has a link on wikipedia:

It's a fairly common claim, that TV claims to be present mature material, but then trivlializes the argument into a new set of stereotypes.
It was really more of a girl's show! I remember my Mother, Sister and I really liking it, My Father and Brother not so much!

Back when TV Land cared about what their viewers wanted.

I DO! I remember when it first aired, I was 14. Cute charming show but rattled too many cages, so sadly got axed.
