Having grown up watching UM (and now the reruns), certain phrases have crept into my daily life, and now that of my wife and kids.
For example: - Whenever I pretend to be mad at my wife, I use the line from the live exorcism on UM and say, "Quiet, devil! Listen to the prayers!" - Being in Minnesota, my hands are often cold in the winter. When I touch my kids on the arm and they complain about cold hands, I invoke the Resurrection Mary story and say, "That is the touch of a corpse." Now THEY run around and grab each other and scream "TOUCH OF A CORPSE!" (Their little friends in the neighborhood think they are nuts for saying this and clearly don't get it... )- I have been known to say: "Yep. And I'm Michael Jordan. And I play basketball for the Chicago Bulls." - When asking my kids who made a mess and they deny it, I invoke the Donnie Hanson story and say, "So you want me to believe that someone came in here, identity and motive unknown, and did this?" These are just a few but I didn't realize how often I quote this show until I started thinking about it. Are there any lines, phrases, or rituals from UM that are part of your daily life? |

....when they release the Robert Stack versions on Amazon and you haven't watched any other show on TV for a week...even though you have seen every single segment previously...but you have this fear in the back of your mind that they could pull those shows at any minute, because it seems to good to be true, so you watch as much as you can as often as you can

Sometimes I miss with my wife who knows I love the show. I'll say something along the lines of "I'm taking out the trash" or "Going for a walk with the dog". Then I'll imitate Robert Stack's voice as say "He was never seen again" as I walk out the door.

Yep, I'm out at night often (or used to be more often over the past 10-15 years: used to work 3rd shift) and whenever I'm at an ATM, in a desolate area, or a part of my city (or another: accidentally went through Gary, Indiana with some friends at night about 8 years ago) that I don't travel to very often, the UM theme song or similar creepy music with a Robert Stack voice-over about something bad happening to me will cross my mind at least once, lol.

If ANYTIME you think "I'll clean" you immediately have to resist the urge to follow it up with, "I live here. I like to live in a clean house."

I was putting my clean laundry away last night, and I have a several pairs of socks that have different colors at the heel and toe, including an orange pair. I was able to match up every other pair, but one of the orange ones is missing. I swear. I'm not kidding. No joke. I'm thinking that maybe my cat hid it somewhere, which would make sense since my cat is orange also.

I think your cat was watching that segment earlier and hid it somewhere to mess with you.

I have three similar motivations for watching like crazy now: 1. I love this show and love seeing the original episodes again 2. I want to help pump up the ratings to they make more seasons available 3. Like you, I'm paranoid I will go to the Amazon app and UM will be gone! It's funny because my 8-year-old son came into the family room last night and said, "Dad, are you watching that mysteries show AGAIN? And I can't watch it, either..." Then my wife said, "So we can see the original ones not on the DVD? I can't wait to watch too."

When there's a case I'm obsessing over, I'll have my wife watch the segment to get her viewpoint and opinion on it.

...your immediate answer to this is "There's no such thing as watching too much Unsolved Mysteries."

I think it's because all of the notes played on the piano in the closing theme are played in minor key, which we associate with fear, discomfort, and other things of that nature. The bass also sounds like something out of a late 70's/early '80's British "art rock" song, like from groups like Roxy Music or Japan (i.e. the late Mick Karn), ha. |
