Viola Davis was a leading lady in that movie. Putting herself up as supporting is kind of a cheat.
Hugh Grant tried the same thing but didn't get his expected nod. How to get away with putting yourself in a less competitive category. ![]() This video of Viola and her over the top persona cracks me up. :https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ca0f1sPTct0lol: |

After seeing La La Land, I knew it would be a huge contender. It's the type of film that the Academy dreams about. It will take quite a few of them. Emma Stone even has a real shot, even though Ryan Gosling was better and he has no shot.
The biggest surprise for me was the Amy Adams snub and the Mel Gibson nomination. I didn't think Hollywood had it in them to forgive him. Casey Affleck completely deserves the win. I was really happy for Lucas Hedges. Often times unknown supporting actors are overlooked (Jacob Tremblay for Room). I look forward to seeing him in an off Broadway show in a couple weeks. |

I think may Michelle Williams could be an upset though like when Sylvester Stallone was supposed to get best supporting actor and it went to Mark Rylance for Bridge of Spies. Sometimes being overly hyped doesn't pay off. I remember some obscure actress named Meryl Streep winning over Viola Davis for lead actress when she was the expected winner for The Help which ironically was seen as more of a supporting category. At any rate it is a very competitive race this year. |

I am frankly surprised Denzel was nominated for lead actor. A lot of people thought he overacted the part too much. He didn't get best director nod but Fences did get a best picture nomination. So he shouldn't be too upset today. I was happy for Nicole Kidman but dissappointed for Taraji P. Henson. I heard great things about her performance from my brother. I really need to get out and see a movie once and awhile.

I've been reading that there is some controversy going on regarding Casey Affleck's OSCAR nomination.
He settled out of court with 2 female crew members from his film I'm Still Here in 2010 after they said he "encouraged a nearly daily barrage of sexual comments, innuendo and unwelcome advances by crew members." "Fresh Off the Boat's" Constance Wu is one actress who is openly bashing Affleck on her Twitter: https://twitter.com/ConstanceWu |

Taraji was also really good, but unfortunately for her, it was a really competitive category this year that even had a snub in it. |

By today's nominations it seems that Mel Gibson has been "forgiven" for his scandalous behavior so I guess that applies to Affleck too. Why do some men have to act like such beasts? Bill Cosby's trial is coming up in June. I wonder what will happen there.
