I've often wondered the same thing since that was a few years before I joined.

Usually there's only 1000 people using the site at a time (on average from what I've seen), 40 of which being actual members and the rest just visiting/lurking. Using that pattern then over 400 members would have been logged in on 12/28/13 which is more than I've ever seen. Maybe it was just a busy time of year.
