Default Unsolved Mysteries is now 30 years old!

It was 30 years ago today, on January 20, 1987, when the first episode of UM was broadcast. Happy 30th birthday to UM!

I've been recently watching my segment set that I bought on ioffer. I've already watched it twice. I'm sure it's the same set that's circulated the trading circuit for years now. I wish someone would put together a bigger, badder set with lots more rare segments.

And if any of you were in elementary school at the time like I was, you might have gone through this phase that started from your first episode and continued throughout the first couple of years of the show....

"It's Wednesday! That means Unsolved Mysteries night....but I'll get scared....but I must watch...but I won't be able to sleep....but I must watch because it looks like a good episode....but I'll be too scared to sleep...but I'll watch Doogie Howser right after to calm my nerves...but that won't end up helping....but I must watch.... but mom will tell me not to watch so I won't scream for her in the middle of the night...but I must watch....O.K., I watched and I think I'll be OK....but now I can't get the theme song out of my head...now I can't sleep."

And so on and so on.

Crazy. I'm 27, but I started watching UM in elementary. My grandmother would keep lifetime on 24/7, so I'd watch the re-runs with Golden Girls, and I'd fake sick to stay home from school just to watch UM. I'd get spooked, and would run around the house checking all of the windows, and constantly looking out the door.

I was in the 4th grade when it premiered and vividly remember watching the Halloween episode with all of the ghost stories. Even as a kid, I found them more amusing than frightening. Then they played the Tallman's Bunk Bed ghost segment and that one scared the living hell out of me. When that "family member" let out that scream amid all that fog toward the end of the segment I refused to go to bed.

Now when I watch any of the ghost segments as an adult I just laugh, but that was so damn scary as a kid that I'll never forget it.

I wonder if they intentionally put up the first season on Amazon today because of the anniversary??

Hard to believe it's that old. But hey, it's still one of the best.

So is it incredibly tacky to say that I can still kinda remember the words in TV Guide when it became a full blown TV series? TV Guide said something like "the occasional series begins a weekly run" or aomething very close to that.

Wonder whose voice it was who did the "This program is about Unsolved Mysteries ..." voiceover at the start of each episode.

Honestly, I didn't become a fan UM until I reached my early teens in the mid 90s. It's one of the few shows where I could watch each episode repeatedly and my interest remains strong.

You took it back in time regarding the mention of the TV Guide. Although this may come off as weird, it actually had a unique scent which I remember vividly.
