I realize this is relative, of course- but at least some of those shows I would call fairly long-lived, at least compared to other shows that only lasted a season or got cancelled after a few episodes and such like that. Quantum Leap ran for 5 seasons and Early Edition ran for 4 seasons, with 95 episodes and 90, respectively- I'd say that's not exactly short-lived. Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman also went for 4 seasons, with 87 episodes total- I'd place in the same category of somewhat long-lived.
The Wonder Years went for 6 seasons and Family Ties went for 7 seasons- I don't think they're really short-lived either. I guess I tend to think of short-lived shows as one season wonders, like Tales of the Gold Monkey (20 episodes plus a pilot), The Flash (1990 series) (22 episodes), Automan (13 episodes), Manimal (8 episodes), Probe (8 episodes) and so forth. But I guess a lot of this list is falling under the "got cut too soon" category. And in that case, I would agree for most of them- especially Quantum Leap and Early Edition and Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman- I would have loved to see further episodes of all of those shows. However, for shows like The Wonder Years and Family Ties- I think they actually ended well. The Wonder Years was brought to a good conclusion (and the characters were getting older too- probably a good close to "The Wonder Years" since that usually refers to the teenage years.) And since Family Ties was so strongly tied to the political world and times of the 1980s (though I do think it is timeless comedy in other ways and can be enjoyed by anyone- though an appreciation of history helps.)- I rather like that it ran entirely in the '80s. I think it seems fitting and it got a good closing- I don't think anything further is needed. |
