Everyone here seems to be really big on riddles and brain teasers at the moment so I thought I'd get in on the act. I'm actually not sure if I've posted this one before or not. I remember a mate of mine telling me it in school and it took me about a day to finally work it out. Here goes -
A man is stuck on an island and with him he has a fox, a goose, and a bag of seeds. He finds a boat and sets off to row off the island but he finds out that there isn't enough room on the boat for him to take the fox, the goose and the seeds over all at once. As he can only take one thing over at a time he will have to leave something on the mainland and the island, unattended, while he rows back and forth to retrieve the remaining items. However he has a problem. He cannot leave the goose and the seeds alone together because the goose will eat the seeds. And he cannot leave the fox and the goose alone together because the fox will eat the goose. So how can the man get all three things off the island and back to the mainland in safety? |

My uncle used to tell me this one all the time. I'll let someone else answer it though.

Let me take a stab at this.
First take the goose leaving the fox and seeds behind. Second take the Fox and bring the goose back. Third leave the goose and take the seeds over to the fox. Fourth come and take goose across. D |

Let me give it a shot-
Okay we have the goose, a bag of seeds, and a fox. I think the fox would go first. Then row the boat back and get the seeds. Then go back and get the goose. I dunno if that is right, but at least everything is on the other side.

Given up? Ok, here's the real answer -
First of all the man would row over to the mainland with the goose. This means he has left the fox and the seeds on the island together - this is ok as the fox will not eat the seeds. The man will then leave the goose on the mainland and row back out to the island to get the seeds. Once he has gotten the seeds back over to the mainland he faces a problem - he cannot leave the goose and the seeds alone together while he goes to get the fox because the goose will eat the seeds. So he will have to leave the seeds on the mainland and take the goose back over to the island. Once he gets back over to the island, he will leave the goose there while he takes the fox over to the mainland. He will then leave the fox on the mainland with the seeds and go back over to the island to retrieve the goose. Hey presto! The man was able to get all three things back to the mainland without any of them eating each other! Congrats to Ags2000 for getting the correct answer!
