Which one of Pa's friends was the better guy?

Mr. Edwards was a drunkard and he could be very annoying and sometimes very unstable as a husband and father.

Jonathan Garvey was a very good father and husband. He was also smart and hardworking.

My vote goes to Jonathan!

Cool

In my opinion Mr. Edward's flaws (drinking, gambling, etc.) made him a more interesting character than Jonathon Garvey and they didn't prevent him from being a good and loyal friend to Charles and the rest of the Ingalls family.

Sure Mr. Edwards had his flaws, but he loved Charles Ingalls and the rest of the family and would have given the shirt off his back for anyone of them even though he didn't have much as well. Mr. Garvey was also a good friend, but like stated above I don't think his character was as well developed as Mr. Edwards.

Usually, I liked Mr. Edwards better and thought he was a more interesting character. However; I REALLY liked it when Jonathan beat up one of Standish's toughs after the tough had harassed Mary and beaten up Charles and got the job as a bar bouncer out of it! It was virtually the only time Jonathan got to make the most of his strength and didn't have to backtrack or apologize for it!

The better guy?

Hmm, that's a tough one. They both had their good and bad points. Mr. Edwards could be a drunkard, but like someone said here he would give you the shirt off of his back, and he was very loyal to a friend. And Mr. Garvey was a great guy, but he had been known to jump to conclusions and/or go off on impulse(That whole "You said I was crazy" episode comes to mind).

So my vote has to go to Not Sure.

It's hard for me to say but I did really like Mr. Edwards. I haven't seen the show in a while and I honestly can't remember that much about Mr. Garvey.
