the thing behind rob & laura's bed - Sitcoms Online Message Boards

ok... so if any of you are watching an episode with a scene in rob and laura's bedroom... please note the strange.... hourglass shaped.... horizontally-striped... "thing" behind rob's bed. could someone tell me what the heck that is? i am 24 (i didn't start watching "dvd" til.... well..... dvds came out - hehehe) and, of course, did not grow up with the dick van dyke show.. so maybe that object behind his bed is something everyone kept in their house in the 60's :-).... anywayz - just curious. lemme know!

I've aften pondered the mystery of 'that weird looking thing behind the bed'!

I've thought it mighta been a drum or something...maybe flattened out as a wall decoration.

We may never know!

I apologize for bringing this old subject up...

And I am about to date myself for answering this question LOL
But my mother had one of these. What it actually is, is an ornate container for those long fireplace matches. However, they were so pretty, that alot of women had them just for decoration, using them sometimes as a vase or a "catch-all".

Hope this eases your mind.
