TV BBC Renews "Call the Midwife" for 2 More Seasons

BBC Renews Hit Drama "Call the Midwife" for 3 More Seasons
11/23/16
by Georg Szalai

The BBC said Wednesday that it has ordered three more seasons of hit drama "Call the Midwife" for flagship channel BBC One.

Seasons seven to nine were commissioned by Charlotte Moore, director of BBC content, and Piers Wenger, director of BBC drama commissioning. Each season will consist of eight hourlong episodes and a holiday special. The order will take the nuns and midwives featured in the show, which in the U.S. has aired on PBS, into the mid-1960s.

Season six will start in early 2017.

Made by Sam Mendes' Neal Street Productions, "Call the Midwife", which debuted in 2012, has been the most-watched drama series in the U.K., the BBC said.

All seasons have seen "near or over 10 million viewers per episode," the public broadcaster said. "The series has been praised for its compassionate and bold approach to issues including stillbirth, mental health, abortion, homosexuality, race and disability."

Said Pippa Harris, executive producer for Neal Street:

"Like a truly supportive parent, the BBC has nurtured our series from conception onwards, and this exceptional three-series commission further demonstrates their care and commitment."

Said Moore:

"I’m privileged to have Britain’s most popular drama series on BBC One, and this new three-[season] commission underlines our commitment to the show."

Heidi Thomas, creator, writer and executive producer of the show, said:

"I am hugely excited by the prospect of creating three more seasons of Call the Midwife. In the 1960s, Britain was a country fizzing with change and challenge, and there is so much rich material — medical, social, and emotional — to be explored. We have now delivered well over one hundred babies on screen, and like those babies, the stories keep on coming!"

BBC Period Drama "Call the Midwife" Handed Bumper Two Season Order Through 2022
by Peter White
March 4, 2019

BBC period drama "Call the Midwife" is set to run through until at least 2022 after the British public broadcaster renewed it for a further two seasons.

The series, which airs on PBS in the U.S. has been handed a season ten and eleven consisting of eight episode seasons and two Christmas specials.

Creator Heidi Thomas said, “Even after all these years, it still feels as though Call the Midwife has more truth to tell, more tears to cry, more life to celebrate, and more love to give. We are blessed with the best cast, crew, and audience a show could wish for, and I could not be more excited about our future.

EP Pippa Harris said, “We are delighted and humbled by the continued warmth of the audience response to Call the Midwife. It’s a testament to the extraordinary creativity of Heidi Thomas who pours her heart and soul into every episode.

We are thrilled that the BBC have put such faith in the show by commissioning two more series and can’t wait to watch our wonderful cast and crew tackling all the social and medical changes which the swinging sixties will bring.

Charlotte Moore, Director of BBC Content, added, “Everyone at the BBC is delighted we’re welcoming the nurses of Nonnatus House back for another two series and we’re all looking forward to following our cast through the tumultuous years of the late sixties.

I’d like to thank the wonderful cast and crew, and particularly Heidi, Pippa and Ann for their continued creative ambition and dedication to such a very special show.
