BROWN, Dr. Irby B., 84, author and educator, died on October 7, 2016, in Richmond, Virginia. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ethel B. and Irby H. Brown. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Ilia DesPortes Brown; his brother, Robert Brown; his daughter, Cary Crabtree (George); his son, Marshall Brown (Cathey); his grandchildren, Addie, Lauren (Patrick), Julie (Graham), Andrew and Matthew; his great-granddaughters, Savannah and Riley; many cousins, nieces and nephews. He was a graduate of the University of Richmond, where he served as an educator for over 50 years. He received his M.A. and Ph.D in English at the University of Virginia. His honors and awards include Phi Beta Kappa, Raven Society, Omicron Delta Kappa, Pi Delta Epsilon, Phi Alpha Theta, University Players, the University of Richmond's 1st Distinguished Educator award and the United Way of Greater Richmond's Volunteer Special Producer award. He co-authored the books "Love Is All Around: The Making of The Mary Tyler Moore Show", Murphy Brown: Anatomy of a Sitcom" and "Women Television Producers" with Dr. Robert Alley; as well as numerous articles in magazines and journals, including "Television as a Cultural Force." He was a founding member of the Virginia Festival of American Film in Charlottesville. He co-produced the China-American Film Festival with Rose Nan-Ping Chen. He was a talented pianist who chose to share his talents delighting and entertaining his friends and family. Above all, he loved taking great interest in his children's and grandchildren's lives and taking long walks on Malo beach and even longer swims in the Chesapeake Bay. The family will receive friends from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, October 14, at Bliley's Central, 3801 Augusta Ave. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, October 15, at St. Stephen's Church on Grove Avenue, followed by a reception at Westminster Canterbury in The Rooftop Terrace. |
