Today marks the 44th anniversary of what has come to be regarded as the greatest moment in Canadian sports history. It was Game 8 of the 8 game Summit Series between Team Canada---Canada's greatest NHL players---and the USSR, the best players from the old Soviet Union, the same team which, ironically, would take part in the Miracle On Ice 8 years later.
It was one of those iconic moments in history where you knew exactly where you were and what you were doing when the game was on and when Paul Henderson scored his final epic goal. I was in Grade 2 and I watched the game in school along with my classmates and other kids across the country as all classes (and many other businesses) were put on hold so that Canadians can see the historic game, and it has never been forgotten since. You can relive all of the excitement here: Canada vs USSR - Game 8 - Sept. 28, 1972 |
