TV Jane Lynch Returns to "Criminal Minds"

Jane Lynch is Returning to "Criminal Minds"
by Joyce Eng
Sept. 21, 2016

Eight years is enough. Jane Lynch will reprise her role as Reid's mother Diana on "Criminal Minds" this season for the first time since 2008, TVGuide.com has learned exclusively.

Lynch will appear in two episodes early next year for a "heavy Reid (Matthew Gray Gubler) story," executive producer Erica Messer tells TVGuide.com. Her first appearance will come in Episode 11.

Lynch last appeared as Reid's schizophrenic mother in November 2008, a year before "Glee" premiered. Her subsequent short-lived sitcom "Angel from Hell" also prevented her from returning to "Criminal Minds".

"We're really excited. It's a fun Reid story and she's really excited to come back and reprise her role," Messer says. "She's been a busy lady and we're still here, so we're happy to be able to offer that opportunity for her to come back."

Diana's absence, of course, didn't stop the show from mentioning and giving updates on her. In Season 9, Reid received a postcard from his mom about her supervised trip to the Grand Canyon. And last season, Reid took a leave of absence to visit her at Bennington Sanitarium after she took a turn for the worst.

He later revealed, during a cat-and-mouse hostage situation, that his mother has onset dementia and didn't recognize him right away. However, she was doing better by the finale, when Reid was planning a trip with her to Paris.

"They did take a trip together. We learn about their trip to Paris in the premiere. Reid talks about that," Messer says. "Her return will be good. That's why everybody's excited. It was more important than ever to have Jane come guest-star because it will be a big story."

Season 12 premieres Wednesday, Sept. 28 at 9/8c on CBS.

Jane Lynch isn't Done with Diana Reid Yet
by Megan Vick
Aug 23, 2017

We may not have seen the last of Jane Lynch on "Criminal Minds".

The actress says she doesn't know for sure if she'll reappear as Diana Reid in the upcoming season, but she's definitely ready to come back if the BAU gives her a call.

"I don't know if you're going to see Diana Reid again. I hope you do. I would love to come back," Lynch told TV Guide during the Television Critics Association summer press tour while promoting her NBC show "Hollywood Game Night".

"She's in a very interesting place right now. She's suffering from Alzheimer's but she has moments of perfect clarity. She and Matthew Gubler's character [Spencer Reid] have a very interesting, very complicated but very loving relationship. it'd be great to dive in to that again."

The last time we saw Diana, she was safely returned to the BAU after being held hostage by Cat Adams (Aubrey Plaza) and Lindsey (Gia Mantegna). She could return any time as Reid tries to find his way back to working with his team.

Jane Lynch Set for "Beautiful" "Criminal Minds" Final-Season Encore
by Matt Webb Mitovich
February 4, 2019

"Criminal Minds" viewers will get at least one more visit from Reid’s mother before the long-running CBS drama fades to black after next season. As Jane Lynch shared on Twitter, she is back on set right now for an episode that will air during "Criminal Minds‘" 15th and final season, which will run 10 episodes.

This marks the ninth appearance for Lynch, who last guested in the Season 12 finale, when Reid’s nemesis, Cat Adams (Aubrey Plaza), held Diana hostage.

Showrunner Erica Messer tells TVLine that Diana’s final-season return is “related to a revelation” that comes during the Season 14 finale, airing this Wednesday at 10/9c.

Though Diana remains as “unpredictable” as ever, “In some moments of clarity, she’s able to be a really good Mom to Reid,” Messer previews. “It’s a really beautiful way to bring them back together.
