what do they do whenever a contestant wins something they can't use? Like a car but they don't drive?

I don't know. Maybe the contestants are allowed to give them to relatives or friends.

Unless they have to sign some type of clause prohibiting it, I always assumed the winner would be able to sell it after paying taxes on it, of course.

I always assumed they could trade the prize in for its cash value.

I have been on a couple game shows one I was on in the 80's. I won Epilady electric razors being a teenage boy at the time I had no use for a woman's razor so I gave them to my Grandma and Mother.

Some shows do offer cash value for prizes . I kinda think it depends on the show.

If people win something very valuable, like a car, they often have to sell it to pay the tax on the prize.

That's interesting MRPITT. So what game shows have you been on? How was the experience? I've wondered what it's like to be a contestant on a game show for a quite a while.

I was on Family Feud with Richard Karn as well as Couch Potatoes a show about tv trivia hosted by Marc Summers and guest star David Faustino.

Both experiences went Great everyone working on the shows were nice and they treated us well.

Last year a woman without legs won a treadmill on Price is Right. According to this article:

I was on a game show group back when they had newsgroups in the '90s-early '00s. A lot of former contestants and employees were on it, as well as fans. They said most game shows had a take-it-or-leave-it policy--if you didn't want the prize, you just gave it up without compensation. This was for their own budget and the contestant's tax liability.

Then again, Let's Make A Deal once made an offer to one contestant, but she wanted the elephant!

Some shows offer you cash for the prizes you cant use and some stick you with the prize regardless.

I would have thought on the Price is Right, the wheelchair bound gal, that the show would know who is in the audience. I think it looks a bit cruel to have a gift that you can't physically use. Maybe they thought the gal will not get chosen or get on stage and left the prize in. As for gift of the sauna and the treadmill, I tend to think she rejected the prize .
