Default CBS Fall Pilot Review: Kevin Can Wait - Premieres September 19

Kevin Can Wait - Mondays at 8:30PM ET/PT (Moves to 8:00PM ET/PT on October 24) on CBS
Premieres Monday, September 19, 2016 at 8:30PM ET/PT

Kevin Can Wait stars Kevin James as a newly retired police officer looking forward to spending carefree, quality time with his wife and three kids, only to discover he faces tougher challenges at home than he ever did on the streets. Kevin's retirement plans consist of chilling with his family and having epic adventures with fellow retirees Goody, his former partner and close friend, and Duffy, his oldest pal, as well as his brother, Kyle, a fireman whose closest encounter with a blaze would be a grease fire in the firehouse kitchen. However, Kevin's dream is jeopardized when he discovers that Donna, his wonderful wife of 20 years, has shielded him from key family info while he worked overtime protecting the community. Their usually reliable eldest, Kendra is dropping out of college so she can support her unemployed fiancé, Chale, while he designs the next “big app”; his teenage daughter, Sara has budding anger-management issues; and their youngest, Jack is a bit of a hypochondriac. For now, his plans for a cushy life will have to wait, because Kevin has work to do, and this time, his family is his beat.

It's a traditional multi-camera family sitcom. It's comparable to According to Jim, Mike & Molly and The King of Queens.
And in that is what lies the problem, the show hasn't even premiered yet and I can already get a sense of how predictable the show is going to be and CBS will have nothing better to replace it with, that or it's going to go until Kevin gets to work on Paul Blart 3 or something.

I mean just look how long According To Jim lasted and that show isn't on anybody list of favorite shows.

Kevin James is just so naturally funny.

The rest of the cast is sort of el-stinko.

Yeah I like Kevin's family (future son-in-law included) but his cop friends can go. It was nice seeing Gary Valentine on here and this time playing Kevin's brother.

I'm gonna try to watch more current sitcoms this season. This is one of them... "The Great Indoors" is another. And I already watch "Dr. Ken" (though I fell behind last season, I'll catch up).

Kevin James no matter what his size I always find very attractive and appealing.

But I wonder why he doesn't take more of a risk and cast a woman closer to his size. I think that would have been a more interesting casting choice. I think that its kind of vain of him to always cast himself opposite a much hotter female costar. But I guess he doesn't want to be a Mike to somebody else's Molly. Kind of boring and unrealistic if you ask me.

Meanwhile, the pilot was generic and weak and not worthy of a man of his talents.

Leah Remini and he had mad chemistry despite their differences. Not the case here. The wife seems to be devoid of an interesting personality. Maybe she will be given more of a point of view in time.

At any rate, I wish him the best.

I wonder if we'll have more background on Kendra's boyfriend Chale? It sounds to me like he has a British accent but then his name is Chale. I've never heard that name before but it's definitely not British/English. I have no idea what nationality it might be but it rhymes with the vegetable kale at least LOL. I guess I don't like the name but I think the character was funny.

Kevin Can Wait may have had decent premiere numbers (2.6 in the 18-49 demographic with just over 11 million viewers), but its critical reception isn't as positive; generally unfavorable reviews for KCW on Metacritic and Rotten Tomatoes.

New CBS sitcoms usually don't go past one season if their critical reception isn't good enough. Life in Pieces last season had a better critical reception, with approval ratings at Metacritic and RT above 60%. KCW's approval ratings on those sites, by comparison, are below 40%. I think Kevin Can Wait will have to be very careful not to get itself cancelled after one season like so many other The Big Bang Theory lead-outs (even though KCW will no longer be a TBBT lead-out after October).

The second episode wasn't any better about the only funny bit was when the flatscreen fell from the ceiling other than that everything else was dull.

Typical sitcom tropes, funny fat guy married to hot wife with 2-3 obnoxious/smart alecky kids.

King Of Queens is one of my favorite sitcoms, but this Kevin Can Wait crap is terrible and unfunny. Downright embarrassing to watch...

I'm trying to hang in there because I like Kevin so much. I loved King of Queens it was so hilarious the whole cast had a chemistry, and Author was such a riot. Gary Valentine is good. I think the worst part is the guys they have cast as his buddies they are really bad. If they don't make changes there it could spell disaster. I am looking forward to Ray Romano being on the show. I do hope this works out. There are so few good sitcoms left.

You are 100% right. I'm sick of the fat husband and the thin hot wife. It's been done to death even in the animated sitcoms. Come on Kevin! We had Roseanne and that couple were both heavy set and the show was a hit. Time to face reality and see that not couples are like that. I would love to see a show were the wife if heavy and the husband is thin.
