I have been watching a few Dick Cavett shows on Decades. As I recall the show was on PBS and PBS shows were somewhat there but no one really tune in as much as a stronger network. A few weeks ago on Dick saw Valerie Harper, Julie Andrews, Shelly Winters and a few months ago Lucille Ball and her daughter Lucie. I never saw Dick when he first was on and it is fun to go back in time.

The Dick Cavett Show first ran on ABC between 1968-1974 where he was up against Carson on NBC and Merv Griffin on CBS. In 1975, ABC tried something different for late night, premiering "Wide World of Entertainment" which included one week of Cavett each month, one week of Jack Paar, and specials on the alternate weeks. In the 1980's, Cavett moved to PBS.

Cavett attracted the more intellectual audience with his humor and his ability to book guests that usually avoided talk shows, whereas Carson went for the laughs and was far more successful in the ratings.

To me, Dick Cavett was more like Donahue with Merv Griffin mixed in, or if Bob Newhart did a TV show. Not much of a comparison to me, both shows were great but different.

If Dick and Johnny were college kids, Dick would be the guy who went to literary and art shows and hung out with literary art chicks. Johnny would be the hilarious, beer drinking frat dude trying to lay every girl he could find.

This shouldn't even be an issue. There's Johnny and then there's everyone else. Period.
