Default Mallory & Skippy...

Do you think that Skippy should have ended up with Mallory? I always felt bad for Skippy, he was so nice to her and she wasn't very nice to him. He was a LOT better than Nick ever was. I know he was kind of dorky/clumsy, but I think that Skippy and Mallory should have ended up together in the end(like perhaps in the last season).
A relationship between Mallory and Skippy--yes/no and why???

Well I can't say that he was "better" than Nick- I think that Nick was a pretty nice guy himself. If Mallory was not attracted to Skippy, then she should not have been obligated to go out with him. She was friends with Skippy. She told him "no" more than once, so no matter how nice of a person Skippy was, he did continue to pester her.

Lightbulb Hard to give it up

Well when your in love with someone and you can't seem to give up trying you are not aware that you are pestering. I think that women and men should realize that. Being sick in love with someone doesn't mean that your trying to bother them. You just have to let it run it's course. And skippy's ran too darn long!

You also have to realize in real life it wouldn't be easy being a guy like Skippy. Can you imagine going through life and always having girls want to just be friends? Some people pester because there so desperate to be loved, and accepted that they'll do almost anything to attain it. This is sort of the way I look at the character of Skippy.

I feel sorry for Skippy because girls were unwilling to even be friends with him. Almost all of them strongly disliked him.
Concerning Mal and Skip, I say No. I think a friendly relationship was the best. Between them the chemistry just wasn't there. It wasn't exactly with Nick but I think that fit in alot better.

Mallory and Skippy should have ended up together. It seems wrong that they weren't. A relationship between the two would have made a perfect ending.

She and Skippy would have been such a cute couple. She and Nick didn't look right together. She could have done SO much better than Nick.

They should have done a episode where Mallory got drunk and Skippy took advantage of it..and then in the end (as usual) they become friends again!! (hollywood aye?)

Yes, I think Mallory should have ended up with Skippy. He was so sweet to her, he would have done anything for her. I think he would have made a great husband for her. I like to think that she would have eventually realized his positive qualities and fallen in love with him. But when people are young, most usually place a priority on looks and don't get much beyond the surface. As people get older, they realize there are more important qualitites in a mate than just looks.

I recently read a book called Bad Boy, by Olivia Goldsmith(2001) that made me think of the friendship/relationship or better yet the lack there of between Skippy and Mallory. Mallory seemed to go for the "bad boy" type. Which Skippy didn't fall into to. In the book, the lady goes for bad boys and has a friend, but she only considers him a friend and doesn't think of him in a romantic way. Well, the guy asks her to teach/turn him into a bad boy, like the guys she goes out with. Well, she does, and it turns out that the guy ends up looking really cute, having gone from looking "nerdy". She finds herself, along with many other women wanting to go out with the guy. In the end, the girl realizes that she liked the guy better the way he was, because not only did she change him, in regards to appearance, but personality as well.
I think it would have been interesting to have seen an episode in which this happened where Mallory turns Skippy into the kind of guy she would want to date. Granted, I think she should have liked Skippy for who he was to begin with. He was cute in his own way.

What do you think?

I used to think that it would have been cool for Mallory and Skippy to get together but now I think that would have been to cliche'. I still didnt want to see her with Nick. I thought it would be funny if they did a reunion show and Alex was with Ellen (they were so cute together - I know they are really married) Mallory with an Alex type but only smarter with more money then Alex since she despised guys like Alex on the show and that would make Alex go crazy, and Jennifer would end up with that guy that gave her the exray of his brain (I know River Pheonix is dead now) but that would have been what I would like to have seen.

The other day I went to Gary David Goldberg's website. I saw that there is a section where you can ask him questions. Here is what I asked him about Mallory and Skippy and what his response was. It's a shame they never considered it.

question: Did the writers on Family Ties ever consider putting the Mallory and Skippy characters together? I know the Mallory character didn't feel the same way the Skippy character did, but she could have come around. I have always been a huge fan of Family Ties and wished that the two characters had gotten together. I know that the Nick character was brought in at the start of Season 4, and became Mallory's boyfriend. I wasn't a fan of the Nick character. I think all the actors and actresses did great on the show.

Thank you so much for all you did with Family Ties. It will forever be my all-time favorite show. My two faovrite characters on the show were Mallory and Skippy. I saw the Famly Ties reunion on the Today show and was thrilled to see everyone together again. Best of luck with your new book.
Sincerely,
Jenny

Hi Jenny,

No. We never considered it, really. Although strange things happen in real life, don't they. It was always a good source of comedic conflict for us.
Thanks for the kind words. I hope you enjoy the book.

I vote yes, but , it does make you think, just imagine Nick and Mallory today, she sitting home in the trailer with the 6 kids, him coming back from the mailbox with his welfare check, hoping to afford gas to get his '82 pickup truck to town , where he could find more garbage for his "art", and get to his AA meeting!
(I REALLLLLLY hated Nick, can you tell? )
