Hello - been away for a while due to the lack of accessible UM pretty much anywhere.
Delighted to see that UM re-runs are on Freeview Channel 66 over here in England (2 episodes Sat and Sun between 5 and 7pm). Hope that helped someone, somewhere and...up came Mark Nichols on the wheek of re-runs last weekend. Anyway, my question isn't about Nichols' guilt as I'm 99.9% sure that at the very least he knows far more about what happened to Mrs Nichols than he has ever let on. He may not have physically done the deed himself, but he certainly knows who did - much like my view of the Tim McClure case in that respect. I suppose it's the same thing you could ask of someone like McClure - why draw all that negative attention to yourself after basically getting away with it and no longer being under active investigation? Was he trying to flush out a 'suspect' to lead the cops down a cul-de-sac? Did he fail to realise that he hardly has the sort of personality that people like or warm to easily? Maybe he just completely misjudges how he comes over on camera... |

I think it boils down to your last sentence. I would venture a guess that Mark Nichols has some sort of personality disorder- be it narcissistic or antisocial. In both cases, folks with this disorder have an inflated sense of self. I'm sure Mark thinks he comes off GREAT on camera, when about 95% would argue the reverse.
There is also a part of me that thinks he's getting his jollies by doing this-- kind of another way to rub salt in the wound, you know? "I did it and I'm sitting here insisting that I didn't. What are you gonna do about it?" God, I dislike Mark Nichols. |

I personally believe that at the time, Nichols thought he could get by with the Christie ran off with another man and was still alive theory. IIRC, the segment even had a part of the reenactment showing Nichols working at a gas station seeing "Christie" drive by and duck down to avoid being seen by him. With the passage of time, there's no way in hell that he didn't murder her. But back when the segment was filmed, I'm sure there was a small contingent of people who thought it was possible that Christie was still alive and ran away to escape an abusive spouse.

I won't say who I am as I'd like to maintain my privacy but I know this man very very well, and I can attest that he is a sociopath and narcissist. He is full of stories that make him out to be a hero when you know for a fact these things never happened. I have seen his temper, and I have felt his temper. In the end, he always sees himself as a victim and you have to play his games to keep the peace. In short, I can pretty well say that he absolutely did it.

I definitely agree the runaway theory was more believable at the time, and unfortunately so much time has passed we will likely never know what actually happened. I think something happened after they went to the convenience store and before Mark arrived home and was seen by the babysitter. I agree with the baby-sitter that it's unlikely Christie would have walked by her unnoticed. Maybe a fight broke out between them after they stopped by the store, or somehow he learned she had consulted a divorce attorney. In any case, something happened between their date night at the bar and Mark's return home. |

For those of you who have dogs, do you ever play fetch with them where you pretend to throw a ball and see if they'll be fooled into chasing it? Mark Nichols seems like the kind of guy where you pretend to throw the ball and he'll spend 3 hours trying to find it. I watched this segment yesterday for the first time in many years and it really struck me how dumb he came across. He should have been easy enough to fool into some kind of confession at some point. Like the police tell him, "we know everything," and then he'll start giving every single detail immediately. |

He's moved several times but is back in Nebraska. He is divorced from his 3rd wife with whom he'd had 2 more kids. Christi's kids still want to know what happened to their mother but are at peace with their father. Sadly the most they'll get from him is a deathbed confession, though that much is pretty doubtful.

This is by far one of the most infuriating segments of UM, at least for me. I'm sure that's because I am completely convinced of Mark's guilt in the matter. Again, I don't want you to say too much or potentially put yourself out there for exposure, but you mention that Christi's kids want to know what happened to their mother but have made peace with their father... am I to assume they have a relationship with their father after all that? Just curious... |
