I just saw an Instagram post that said that Netflix has commissioned a reboot of Mama's Family with the original set, which has supposedly been in Vicki's guest beach house since the end of the series. This is only one post, and it didn't come from either Netflix or Vicki herself.
I'm sure Vicki will update us through her site if she's actually involved in the project, and I find it sort of weird that she didn't mention the negotiations that had to be taking place long before now. She doesn't necessarily have to star in the project to be involved in it, remember. She could just have a consultant's title, and Netflix could be moving forward with an entirely new cast, especially since Vicki has speaking and nightclub dates booked well into 2017. It seems that the only other member of the original cast that would seem to have a realistic chance to be even a guest star is Allan Kayser. Kenny Berry, Beverly Archer, and Dorothy Lyman are all either semi- or completely retired. I would guess that Carol and Betty White are too old for their original roles as well, and I'm not even sure that Carol could play Eunice facially due to her plastic surgery. I don't really know what to make of this, especially since it could very well be that Vicki's not involved at all except for donating the set. If she's not only not in it, but not even involved behind the scenes, it really isn't Mama's Family, and this is just another example of Hollywood trying to make a fast buck off an established name instead of exploring new ideas. Even if she is involved, I have a hard time believing that this show will do anything to add to the legacy that Carol, Vicki, and the rest of the cast established. I hope I'm wrong, but it'll take a lot of convincing. What do the rest of you think? |

Let's just pray that this doesn't happen. Everyone here knows that I'm a huge MF fan. I used to want a remake but in recent years I've completely changed my mind about it...it would tarnish the legacy of the original. I wouldn't be opposed to a cast reunion like what was done for the Time Life DVDs but an actual show or movie would be horrible.

Sorry, but I'm not sure how to link properly, and I wouldn't want to mess up trying. If you want to delete the thread because of the lack of a link, go ahead. It's all just rumors at this point anyway.
EDITED TO ADD: It looks like I was taken. The Instagram page's name is televisionandmoviefacts. I clicked on the name in the post I found, and two or three of the other posts were almost certainly jokes. One had Big Bird from Sesame Street nominated for Oscars as both Best Male Actor and Best Female Actor. Sorry, guys. I should have waited for real confirmation, It won't happen again. |

Exactly why I don't waste my time on crackpot websites like that. For my TV info, I only visit this site and tvshowsondvd.com.

I was thinking if this can be done?
They went in order from "Eunice" didn't they? Whatever age Mama was in 1982 when the show came out, that's how old she was then, now it's 2017...how old would she be now? Had this been done in early 2000, like a reunion series or something, maybe. It's almost 2020. Tiffany Thelma would be out of college. She was born in 1990 so she'd be 27 now. A re-boot where Vicky plays Mama is okay, but a whole new cast playing everyone else? Nah! I don't think it would work. It would have to be set in today's times and Mama would have been born in the 1930s or 1940s. The original Mama was born in the 1920s and her kids seem have been born in the late 1930s and early 1940s. The new Mama would have to have been born in the 1930s/1940s (as the old Mama would be dead...it would have to mess with legacy of course)and the new Vint/Naoimi/Mama's kids,et. would have been born in the early 1960s. Bubba and the grandkids would have been born in 2000s .It would have to change years for sure with who was born when. A re-boot where we see Mama TODAY since the original ended, yes. But how old would Mama be? What year was Thelma born? It seems to me she was sassy and in her 60s throughout the 1980s and as the show ended. So I'd say in the 1990s she was 70s and 2000s she was 80s and now in the 2010s she'd be in her 90s or well close to or over 100 now. Right? |

Anyone who would produce something like this shouldn't get caught up in details. Just put Vicki in the costume, give her a bunch of younger people to fuss at, and have done with it. I'm not even sure I'd acknowledge any part of the original Mama's Family canon. (Vicki really doesn't in her traveling show; it's pretty much a standup act done in character with some songs thrown in. I don't think she references kids, grandkids, husbands, or anything else. If someone wanted to, they could enjoy it without ever having watched a "Family" sketch or an episode of Mama's Family.)
