Matthew Rhys Joins "Girls'" Final Season, Calls Role "A Total Departure"

Matthew Rhys is spying a totally new cover.

The Emmy-nominated star of FX’s "The Americans" has quietly booked a role on "Girls", appearing in the sixth and final season in a role described as “a total departure” from the parts he has previously inhabited.



“That’s a prime example of our show opening doors,” Rhys recently told The Hollywood Reporter of his forthcoming role on the HBO comedy.

“Lena Dunham watches it and goes, ‘Oh, come and do this.’ It’s a total departure, and that’s what you always want.”



Rhys’ "Girls" gig prevented him from attending Saturday’s Television Critics Association Awards, where "The Americans" won best drama series for a second consecutive year.

Further details about his role and the length of his stint were not immediately known.
