Why is there so many kids and family movies rated PG these days? - Sitcoms Online Message Boards

In the movie world I have been noticing that a lot of family oriented and kids movies are rated PG this year and I would like to know why this is a trend in movies today? Is it because PG rated movies do better at the box office or is it because PG rated movies are more popular with families this year? Take for example I noticed that Disney rated Zootopia PG and also when Finding Dory debuted it also was rated PG and I have noticed that because of this G rated kids movies have suddenly disappeared with the exception of The Peanuts Movie which was rated G. I remember during the 80's and 90's there was a time when kids and family movies were rated G but now with the movie industry making tons of family and kids movies that are making huge successes it seems that PG rated movies are now becoming the top family movies today
Has anyone noticed this about family and kids movies today?

Time's have changed. What was considered G rated back in the 80's might be considered PG rated material today. Films with G and PG ratings back then could get away with a lot more than they can now. As an example, films today that even hint at smoking or alcohol will garner it a different rating than a film back in the 80's.

i remember when the orignal first live aciton teeagne mutnat ninja turtles movies first came it was rated PG! but if it was released today it probably be rated R!!

Some PG films in the 80's and 90's used the word **** once. Here's a few things that were used in a 90's PG film that would give it a PG-13 rating today...

"Bingo"-This film sucks, but the brothers give each other the finger.
"Cops and Robbrsons"-Jack Palance curses at the lawn mower...we rented this film and had to turn it off for that scene!
"Clifford"-There was a party scene and a teen drops an s-bomb.
"Cop and 1/2"-There scene where Burt Reynolds pees...'nuff said!
"The Goonies"-If this film came-out in 2015, it would be PG-13 because there's smoking and Chunck drops an s-bomb. Then there's the David statue!
"E.T."-Elliot's comeback to his brother, use of beer, and the line "Health ****" wasn't taken-out of the 2002 version, but all have earmarks of a PG-13 film.

It's interesting to note how many films received G back in the early days of ratings that wouldn't have gotten it. For instance Gone With The Wind, Planet Of The Apes and Head (the Monkees film)were all rated G. There had been a rumor Head was originally R but this is an urban legend. But yeah watch a movie rated PG in the 70's and you'll wonder why. Airplane has a nude scene and is PG. Jaws is rated PG. Star Wars almost got a G but they added a scene to push it to PG. On the other hand, strangely a lot of movies rated R would likely be PG-13 today. The Blues Brothers comes to mind because outside of the swearing (and if I recall it's mainly one scene)the movie isn't R material. No nudity, little violence or sexuality, just swearing.
