Default Scariest UM Segment Article

I apologize if I'm late to the party on reporting this, but I just stumbled across an article someone wrote that named his scariest UM segments. You can find the article here.

If you don't feel like clicking, here's the list:

1. The Omar Arsonist
2. Matthew Chase
3. Tallsman's Ghost
4. Blind River Rest Stop Murders
5. Allagash Abductions
6. New Hampshire Serial Killer
7. Cindy James

I don't necessarily agree with the list, but I love that someone committed it to a webpage!

How does this list stack up to your favorites?

Omar the Arsonist was creepy until they caught they guy and he was a teenager . Matt Chase's case was scary IMO. That guy on the surveillance camera was so creepy and this case was mysterious. The rest of the list is good too IMO. When the New Hampshire serial killer stabbed that pregnant woman and later she drove right up to his truck was one of the scariest moments on UM ever.

Well, I certainly wouldn't put the Omar Arsonist at the top of the list if you're evaluating by today's standards since it was solved and we know it was just some punk kid. But watching it for the first time as a youngster, it was one of the scariest things I'd seen on television. Tallman's Ghost and the Allagash Abductions are segments that probably wouldn't frighten me much if I watched them for the first time as an adult, but were pure nightmare material for me when they originally aired.

Wouldn't have any objection to including any of the others on the list though.

That posting has been around for several years but it's still relevant to UM.

Of the cases mentioned, Matthew Chase's wins IMO because the guy next to him (at an ATM that actually had a surveillance camera in 1988) HAS TO either BE his killer or was associated with the person that pulled the trigger and killed him.

The Matthew Chase segment was very, very creepy. The picture of Matthew with that figure right behind him is super eerie. Especially knowing that Matthew was likely dead shortly afterwards. I agree with it being on the list. Omar the Arsonist was creepy as well, until you find out it was some dumb, punk kids.

For me, the scariest/creepiest case will always be the Signal Mountain murders. No matter how many times I watch that segment, the music, along with the segment gives me the chills.

The ATV murders? Totally.

I also find the bowling alley massacre to be a very well done, creepy segment.

The Son of Sam segment where the kids walked up to the Satanic cult having a ceremony was scary AF to me as a kid... Actually any of the Satanic stuff back then gave me nightmares.

I think the one that made me actually jump while watching it was Joe Weldon Smith when he jumped out at the house owner. The segment wasn't that scary but that piece of it was.

This is another very old article about the scariest UM segments which I'm sure has been posted here before, but I think it merits a reposting since it was written by our very own MegtheEgg86:

Definitely some excellent choices on this list!

I didn't see this on either list, but I would nominate the Ellenders. I was in my mid-teens when I saw it for the first time, but I definitely remember feeling very uneasy.

I am the odd one here, but the Omar segment never scared me. I don't know why, but it just isn't a segment I choose to rewatch.

About the Allagash Abductions: I was somewhat disappointed with this one, too. I remember buying the Best of Unsolved Mysteries DVD on amazon a while back, and being disapointed it was the first episode. But hey, if I didn't have a backlog of old VHS episodes to choose from, I probably would have not thought twice about it.

The scariest episodes for me, the ones I remember from my childhood, were Cindy Anderson, Clarence Roberts (still blows my mind), and Dan Short. Dan Short's, I remember watching it at my grandmother's house as a kid. Cindy Anderson's father really creeped me out, too. I hate saying that, though, because he was a victim. But from a kids perspective, he sorta creeped me out.

Add me to the list of people who was totally freaked out by the Omar arson tapes until we found out the truth. That gave me a few sleepless nights.

I agree with most of the list, except the ghost one ( I never believed the ghost ones so they didn't freak me out) and Cindy James, because I am one who believes she had Munchhausen's. A few more that freaked me out were Jenny, who got hit with the 2x4 on the motorcycle, and the boaters who were run over and the girl got her face cut off by the propeller. The people in the other boat were just so creepy, staring silently at what they had done and then just driving off... and I've posted this before but the way the woman stands up after they hit them totally makes me think she was "on her knees" distracting the man who ran over their boat. Of course I didn't notice that part until much later because I was pretty young the first time I saw the case. Angela Hammond is scary too, if the whole thing was true, and I assume the person (if he existed) took the decal off because that seemed pretty unique and should have stood out, I'm surprised no one had remembered seeing it before this happened and said "oh yeah, that sounds like so and so's truck" so either it was possibly made up to throw investigators off, or he was from out of the area.

The orange socks cases freak me out too, what a strange detail to add to your victims. There are lots of weirdos around this country.

The Dick Hansen segment. It is very similar to the Dwayne McCorkandale, Carolina hit and run, and the Blind River segments in that it occurred out on the open road, thus making it that much harder to solve and that much scarier. Unlike those others, however, I do believe that Dick was involved in something that got him killed. The guy that murdered him did not do it over a San Francisco 49ers bumper sticker. I believe that that guy was someone who was hired to kill Dick.
