Scarlett Johansson Named Highest-Earning Actress in Hollywood History

With a diverse filmography including standalone action vehicles, critically-lauded independent films, and several franchise blockbusters to her credit, Scarlett Johansson has been named the highest-grossing actress of all time by Box Office Mojo.

The tracking site recently released an updated version of its top-earning actors list, which ranks the 31-year old star of films like Captain America: Civil War and The Avengers at No. 10 among Hollywood performers, with North American box office receipts totaling over $3.3 billion.



Johansson began appearing in feature films as a child actor in the mid-1990s, though her career took off in the early 2000s with roles in prestige pictures like Ghost World, The Horse Whisperer, Lost in Translation, and Match Point.

Since then, she has branched off into the superhero genre, appearing as comic book character Black Widow in five films since 2010.







In 2016 alone, Johansson has already appeared in two films that have grossed hundreds of millions of dollars in North America. Captain America: Civil War, released in May, has earned $404.3 million domestically (and counting), while The Jungle Book, in which she voices the ominous python Kaa, has thus far earned $358.4 million from the United States and Canada.

Other top-earning hits among Johansson’s filmography include the fifth-highest grossing movie of all time, 2012’s The Avengers ($623.4 million), and its 2015 sequel, Age of Ultron ($459 million).

Iron Man 2 made $312.4 million in 2010 and 2014’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier pulled in $259.8 million, while the actress’ standalone action vehicle Lucy earned $126.7 million nearly two years ago.
