TV reruns that lose general appeal over the years - Sitcoms Online Message Boards

Let's include shows that are dated and timeless, but I'll mix them up.

Route 66 - The acting was... primitive but not early primitive. Stories are mundane and nauseating. Also, I don't care much about prominent guests., but the leads were interesting.

Becker - The leading titular character is too bitter and angry. Didn't care much about other characters.

Spin City - Political satires nowadays make real-life politics very sad.

Full House - Don't ask. Seriously.

Family Matters - Just... don't.

The Mary Tyler Moore Show - Great acting, writing, and storytelling. Jokes are... eh. Plus, TV stations have trouble connecting the show to current audiences.

The Cosby Show - Anyone can ask why Bill Cosby is in trouble?

Growing Pains - Watching Kirk Cameron just makes me uncomfortable.

Taxi - Good writing and cast, and good jokes. But it is too depressing anymore.

Barney Miller - Satirical police precinct series on videotape. That's exciting. Wait... who trusts police nowadays?

Friends - Watching episodes as reruns makes jokes lame and too silly. Don't care much about Ross and Rachel, Monica and Chandler, and other dramatic situations.

Everybody Loves Raymond - *shudders* A mean wife gives me the creeps.

Any police procedural series that is not Law and Order - I like courtroom dramas a lot more than Ally McBeal. But police procedural shows lose their punches, especially the 70s ones and current ones.

You can rebut what I said about the above, or you can say whichever shows you agree with me about and then decide what I did not include.

I Love Lucy- The show is great and all but it is reran ALL the time. If they would just give it a break every now and then

Even though I have been a fan of The Honeymooners for years, I think they lose their appeal because the 39 episodes have been rerun so much since the late 1950s.

It deserves one, being on DVD in full in multiple permutations (seasonal releases and two forms of a full-series release among them).

She had a spinoff Rhoda. I've not watched it, but I heard it's not that appealing overall, especially since the divorce between two characters.

There was Valerie, which later became The Hogan Family. That show was very lame before and after the leading character was killed off.

Me-TV reran Rhoda about a year or two ago and it didn't last very long on there.

ABC Family tried to give Valerie/The Hogan Family 2 chances and both chances BUSTED.

Most of the Norman Lear shows also fit into the same category as I Love Lucy. Beloved shows, but rerun all the time. they need a break

Mary was funny, and Mary Richards the character was funny in places, but her character was thee straight woman of all the other characters, the angry, borderline alcoholic boss, the idiot newsman, the sarcastic co-worker, the passive aggressive happy homemaker, then her neighbors, the cool, younger, hip upstairs neighbor, and the passive aggressive (again) landlady.......

Bob Newhart was about the same setup, except Newhart had a background as a comedian so he was funnier, but he also played it mostly straight versus his patients, Carol, and Peter Bonerz. Emily was strangely the straight woman to Bob, these two were funny together. Alex Reiger on Taxi. Andy Travis on WKRP. These were the marquis actors of the show who more or less played straight.

Rhoda the show was OK, but they married her to a guy I think most viewers disliked him. He was a jerk, and Rhoda more or less latched on to him the minute she came back to New York. Couldn't really blame CBS, marrying Rhoda off was probably a ratings bonanza.

Becker was an OK show. It's too 1990's. Just basic CBS sitcom fare. It got into some realism. I liked the blind guy, and the weird dude who hung around the diner (what happened to him?). Wasn't horrible.

Taxi and Barney Miller were some of the best shows of all time and in my book, two of the best sitcoms coming out of ABC. Almost everyone from TAXI had a career, even an A list career after that show ended. Ask a cop, especially an older cop of which show really caught what their profession was, and most would say Barney Miller.

The Cosby Show would be syndicated forever if it weren't for Bill Cosby's crimes against those women. Cosby has been charged with a felony, and is anyone going to watch a show with a convicted rapist?

I liked Everybody Loves Raymond, but I can see why people would hate it. I think the show rang home and was a hit because it was a show about what families are really like, and having to deal with a not so nice mother in law, living across the street. Is this show in syndication?

Actually my show that will never happen (cry) would be to have Frank and Marie move into the same retirement community with Jerry Seinfeld's parents (and the other older characters, with Jerry Stiller). OMG that would have been hilarious. Imagine Frank and Morty Seinfeld, or Marie and Mrs. Seinfeld (who don't like each other)

Looking at Taxi now, I can't stand Danny Devito. SVU I just can't stand anymore. I agree with Alan Bradys' Hair. It is so grim and is so overrated.

I used to like SVU until every story involved Olivia being held hostage or as a victim. And I do agree, all the episodes are too grim.

Seinfeld got old to me after seeing each episode fifty billion times. The Big Bang Theory is starting to have the same effect on me as well.

Why can't Hollywood just quit putting out crap so I don't have to cling to the few good shows until they get worn out?

And it's been on far longer than Gunsmoke was on CBS: Gunsmoke was on from 1955-75, while The Simpsons has been on since 1990.
