Dr. Henry Heimlich, 96, uses his Heimlich maneuver for first time to save life of 87-year-old woman who was choking on hamburger. ... She was sitting next to the right guy, that's for sure. An 87-year-old woman who was choking on her food had her life saved recently by Dr. Henry Heimlich — the inventor of the Heimlich maneuver. It was the first time that the 96-year-old pioneer had the opportunity to use his technique, which he formulated in 1974. "It made me appreciate how wonderful it has been to be able to save all those lives," Dr. Heimlich told the Cincinnati Enquirer. Retiree Patty Ris was eating a hamburger at the Deupree House senior living facility in Cincinnati when a piece of meat became stuck in her throat. ... Dr. Heimlich, who also lives at the retirement home, was sitting next to Ris. He went to work, putting his hands around her stomach. The food soon popped out of the woman's mouth, and she started breathing normally again. "God put me in this seat next to you," Ris wrote in a note to Heimlich, the Enquirer reported. New Jersey boy saved by hero cop after choking on quarter An employee at the retirement facility had also noticed Ris in distress. Even though he had performed the technique twice before, he let Dr. Heimlich take action. Normally, someone on staff would do it. "But,” Perry Gaines told the newspaper, "it is Dr. Heimlich." The Cornell-educated Heimlich has demonstrated the technique often but had never used it before. "Just the fact that a 96-year-old man could perform that, is impressive," his son Phil Heimlich told the Enquirer. |

It is fitting, isn't it?
Several years ago a friend of mine was eating a candy bar or something similar while driving. Not a smart thing to do. He began choking and couldn't breathe. He was driving in a residential area and lost control of his car. He crashed into a fence and the accident dislodged the food and saved his life. No one else was in the car or hurt. |

You would think that he would have used it before he was 96 years old though.

Wow, in 96 years he only had to perform it once.
