In the show's very early years there was a case of a missing girl who was on the verge of being found by a private citizen. I remember a shot of him being in the desert and finding some diralect toys. However, this man too went missing. I searched the wiki page's early episodes but to no avail. Any more dedicated UM fans know which one I am thinking of?

this doesn't sound like a UM segment at all.

I remember it from being a very early episode. Robert Stack mentioned "the bones of a small child" and the image haunted me for a few days afterward.

The vague description you gave of this case is a bit hunting itself, i'll try and see if i can dig up some things on it.

You might possibly be thinking of Laura Bradbury, who was featured on the precursor to UM called "Missing: Have You Seen This Person?". I think some people here have seen at least one of these 3 specials way back when they aired 30 years ago, but nobody has seen them recently and they haven't been reran in decades. They're one of the few remaining "Holy Grails" in terms of us UM/true crime show collectors.
I'm not familiar with a man going missing trying to find her, but then again, I haven't seen the segment. The specials weren't hosted by Stack, but by Meredith Baxter and her then husband. |

Thanks for that info but I know I'd have remembered Alex P. Keaton's mom hosting. Haha.
I do remember that among the diralect toys there was an old Fisher Price Circus Train. We had the same toy and I remember recognizing it on the show. |

I have seen every segment from this time period and I"m 99.9% sure this didn't air on UM. Taking that into account, plus that the episode guide turned up nothing even close to this and nobody else remembering it, I think it's safe to say this wasn't on Unsolved Mysteries, at the very least, not during the first few years.
Offhand, the only person I can think of off the top of my head that went missing in a desert that was profiled on UM was David Stone. They found some of his personal items as well as some numbers he wrote into the sand, but there was no missing girl or toys involved in that case. |
