Creator and show runner of NewsRadio, Paul Simms while writing the episode titled “Injury” was told by the NBC brass that they could use the word “penis” so many times. The episode had Bill McNeal upset about the use of that word by another radio show and kept repeating it in his on-air rant. The actual episode had it maybe six times (I’m not sure to be honest) because that’s how many times NBC said they were allowed to use it. Well in the end, the network changed its mind and put off airing the episode. While originally shot early in season two, an edited version wasn’t broadcast until the very end of season three! One of the funnier lines was cut. Dave is letting Bill know he’s being fined. He hands the anchor a piece of paper with the amount he’s to pay and Bill asks “Total?” to which Dave responds “Per penis.” I only know of that line because it appeared in syndication (though not the A&E airings). That line was also cut from the original Sony DVD release. The episode, “Injury” was included in the seasons 1 & 2 box set, placed last. Then, it was also included in the season three box set, again placed last - this time following the order for which it was broadcast. When Mill Creek re-released the first two seasons on DVD, the episode is listed but not included. It’s also not included in the complete series box set from them. I bought it myself and looked for it. If someone knows where it is, please let me know but I couldn’t find it. Again, it’s listed just not actually included on the disc.
It’s funny that this episode appears twice on the Sony sets and not at all on the Mill Creek one. All because NBC got nervous at Bill’s overusing the word “Penis” and deciding to air the episode much later in its run. |
