Maybe this is a dumb question, but I am just wondering if it's the norm for roommates to become such good friends. Seems natural on Three's Company, but is this realistic?

I'm sure it doesn't happen all of the time, but I'm also sure it happens sometimes.

You would really need an psychoepidemiological study to get a half-way decent answer to that question, but if you're interested in my own personal experiences, I would say it depends.
I've had some roommates who were just friendly acquaintances, I've had others where I was in on all of their secrets and deeply involved in all of the dramatic events of their lives and vice versa. |

Yeah, I guess it makes sense that it depends on the people and situation. I had roommates in college, but while we were nice to each other, we didn't really hang out.
I have noticed that the original trio was more like a family unit than in the Terri years. Maybe because Chrissy became so childlike and Jack and Janet had to "look out" for her? I don't know. |

More likely this would have happened in the 1970s rather than today. Today we can just look at our smartphones and tablets for entertainment. Back then you actually kind of needed people to have fun, so there would have been more opportunities to form connections with people then than today.

Plus they were all sharing one bathroom so I'd say they went beyond close.
