Barbara, being nice, did give Melanie a chance, but Mel was needy, clingy, and obviously needed professional help. Her father, while the better of the two parents, wasn't that great, because he let things reach the point they did.

Her mother didn't care. That was the problem. She said her daughter only tried to commit suicide because she needed attention. She was the bigger baby.

Cliff didn't know there was a girls life at stake. He thought Melanie was a turtle. Although why they didn't just directly tell him, I don't know.
