"Sons of Anarchy" Spin-off at FX Gets Script Order & Title; Elgin James Joins Kurt Sutter as Co-Creator

FX Networks has begun formal script development on the long-rumored Mayans spin-off series from Kurt Sutter’s hit biker drama "Sons of Anarchy".

The offshoot, titled "Mayans MC", will be co-created by Sutter and Elgin James (Little Birds), with James writing the pilot script and both producing. SOA studios Fox 21 Television Studios and FX Productions are back for "Mayans MC".





In the spirit of "Sons of Anarchy", "Mayans MC" will be a dark, visceral family drama that takes a new look at the most American of icons, the 1% outlaw, this time reflected through a Latino lens, per FX.

"I wanted to find a strong, unique Latino voice," Sutter said. "Because I didn't think a white guy from New Jersey should be writing about Latin culture and their traditions. Elgin is that guy."

Kurt Sutter has his motor running again on FX as the cabler today gave the next chapter in his "Sons of Anarchy" saga a pilot order. Production on the first chapter of "Mayans MC" is set to start in March with Sutter as executive producer and co-creator Elgin James as co-EP.

Set in the aftermath of Jax Teller’s death at the end of SOA’s seven season run in 2014, "Mayans MC" will focus on the struggles of EZ Reyes, a prospect in the Mayan MC charter on the California/Mexico border. Fans of SOA will remember the Mayans as important recurring characters on the series, which was and remains the highest rated drama FX has ever had.

"Sons of Anarchy" Spin-off Pilot Undergoes Reshoot; Norberto Barba to Direct

Kurt Sutter’s FX "Sons of Anarchy" spin-off pilot "Mayans MC" is undergoing a reshoot and a recasting of some key roles, Deadline has confirmed.

In addition, Norberto Barba (Preacher, The Path) has been tapped to direct and executive produce.



It’s not unusual for pilot reshoots to occur with big projects. This is the same process the network undertook for both the "Sons of Anarchy" pilot and its upcoming drama series "Snowfall".

Sutter, who initially was planning to direct, will focus on writing and hand reshoot duties to Barba. Recasting is underway, with production expected to begin in late summer.

"Mayans MC" Looks Good for Pickup, FX Boss “Confident” about "Sons of Anarchy" Spin-off's Future – TCA

The promo for the upcoming service FX shown during FX’s TCA executive session included footage from Kurt Sutter’s "Mayans MC" pilot along with FX’s current and library series.

Is this a good sign that the pilot, which is undergoing a reshoot and a recasting of some key roles, is heading to a series pickup? “It’s a good sign,” FX CEO John Landgraf said. “I’m really excited where we are in the process on Mayans. I’m very confident about the future of the spin-off.”

Landgraf also said that he is excited about the show having an almost all-Latino cast. He expects to make a pickup in about three months.

"Sons of Anarchy" Spin-off "Mayans MC" Gets Series Order at FX – TCA 2018

FX has picked up to series "Mayans MC", Kurt Sutter’s "Sons of Anarchy" spin-off, with a 10-episode order for a 2018 premiere. The announcement was made today at TCA.

The series order comes after the pilot underwent a reshoot and recasting of some key roles. FX CEO John Landgraf expressed optimism for the future of the spin-off at last summer’s TCA, saying that he expected a pickup in about three months.




Co-created by Sutter and Elgin James and hailing from Fox 21 Television Studios and FX Productions, "Mayans MC" is the next chapter in Sutter’s "Sons of Anarchy" saga that was the highest-rated ongoing drama series in FX history.

The Mayans were recurring and pivotal players in "Sons of Anarchy" throughout the show’s seven-year run.




"Mayans MC" is set in a post-Jax Teller world, where EZ Reyes (JD Pardo), fresh out of prison, is a prospect in the Mayan MC charter on the Cali/Mexi border. Now EZ must carve out his new outlaw identity in a town where he once was the golden boy who had the American Dream within his grasp.

Edward James Olmos, Sarah Bolger, Clayton Cardenas, Richard Cabral, Michael Irby, Raoul Trujillo, Antonio Jaramillo and Carla Baratta also star.

Norberto Barba directed the reworked pilot and will executive produce with Sutter. James serves as co-executive producer.
