Biggrin Everybody loves Raymond?

Raymond on this show is an abusive Mama's boy with the Mama from hell. Why Debra stays with this puke and why by the second season she does not suffocate him with a pillow is a testament to this being a sitcom. I've been watching this show in reruns for a year now and can't for the life of me understand why ANYBODY Loves Raymond.

I agree that they're all flawed characters in different ways.

But since you called the Raymond character "abusive," who is he abusing? His parents, children, Debra, or Robert? There's a difference between being neglectful/stupid at times and being abusive.

No Ray has a bit of his Mom and Dad in him, but, rather than confine it to family, Ray unleashes attacks on folks whoever is unlucky enough to enter his door. Marie and Ray are bad and worse, sorry I share a name with the Peter Boyle charcter.. They could only get away with it on a comedy show. In real life Ray would get his teeth knocked in by the second season , Marie and Frank would be on You Tube in a street fight.

Marie definitely had issues, but I would much rather deal with her compared to the lady from the George Lopez sitcom. His mother on there treated him and his family like absolute garbage.

God bless you always!!!

OMG, Raymond is such a horrendous mama's boy and his constant WHINING is beyond annoying. He doesn't even act like a man. Why would ANYONE marry this turd???

While it can certainly be argued that Raymond is a doofus, I'm willing to to cut him a little slack considering: who his parents are and the fact that he is a rather decent provider.

I saw the exaggerated flaws in all the characters but somehow still loved them. That's talent.

I still remember the very tender scene with Marie and Frank in bed where Frank wipes Marie's cold cream off her face. Or the tender scene between Ray and Robert after Robert was gored by a bull. See, they could be annoying, mean and crazy to each other, but deep down you could see they loved each other. That's what made the show great, IMO.

OK, good point, it's still funny compared to the junk on today.

I liked Everybody Loves Raymond and watched probably every episode.

Ray is a good, nice decent guy, but he is a lazy mama's boy, a lot of times childish. Marie is a passive/aggressive woman for whom almost no one would be good enough for Raymond and Debra didn't fit the bill.

I thought the show was pretty realistic of what a real family is like with several different generations living in close proximity. Maybe not across the street, but a lot of adults have older parents living in the same town, and they are always ove, or the spouse over there, and so you have to be there too. Families fight and argue.

In some ways, this show was sort of a throwback of shows from the 1960's and 1970's.
