Default The Official Retirement Show Thread! All shows included!

The first one airs today.

I think it was the best one.

Random thoughts.

Julie was filled out more than usual.

Nedra Volz is a treasure.

The really old guy didn't get his All Bran this morning.

I've written before I think Elton and Kiki were more for the home audience then the in show audience (the old people). Would they really know who Elton and Kiki were and like that kind of music?

The "really old guy", if it's the one I think you mean, also has a WKRP connection. He was Ferryman in the episode they sung the funeral home jingle.

I will be Debbie Downer but I didn't like any of the Retirement shows. I'm not a big fan of when shows do burlesque, musical or variety episodes. To me, there never funny.

My mom and I were watching, BonnieG and she agreed that Julie looked her prettiest here.

Val for all her numerous charms couldn't really sing very well. Mack on the other hand had a lovely voice.

What Val did have in these shows was great comic timing on par with Nanette Fabray. Her Elton John was hilarious.

He's the man with the plot, the man with the plan!

Bye Bye!

I can see where you are coming from because depending on my mood I can find these show either hilarious or just plain amateurish.

Duke of Earl as much as I love me some Scarpelli, was pretty painful no matter what mood I am currently in. The costumes were funny, though.

And how ironic that Boyd Gaines got so little to do given how many Tony's he eventually won including one for Best Supporting Actor in a musical for Herbie in Gypsy.

I haven't seen any of these ODAAT eps yet, but as many sitcoms stars also have dancing and singing training and/or talent, we're frequently given sitcom episodes where they get to show off. Other examples are Happy Days, Laverne and Shirley, Facts of Life, Designing Women (though this was more of Dixie's payback for spouting liberal ideas, as I've heard) and the britcom Are You Being Served?

I agree; sometimes I like these episodes, sometimes I groan and think, hey, you're paid to be funny, so be funny! As I have little to no musical talent, some
of my reaction may also be based on jealousy.

Now I SO wanna see my made-me-realize-I'm-gay crush Glenn do his turn!

You can easily trace the lineage of these type of episodes back to I Love Lucy.

He did a 50's number. He and Schneider ,Max and Mark were dressed as 50's greaser, doo wop style singers . Alex was the lead singer and the men were the backups like 50's singing groups were back than. They sang Duke of Earl! It was cute!

I can't wait to see this! Was this season 6, 7,or 8? Just wondering how long I'll have to wait, as the Antenna TV rerun cycle is currently in season 2 (not that I'm not enjoying these, but no Glenn )

OMG thank you. Alex was adorable. I liked his fall into Auntie Francine's arms in the finale.

Overall, it was an interesting but strange viewing experience. At least I Love Lucy had a plausible reason for their musical excursions. Why people would think that advertising agents, writers, flight attendants, dentists, grandmas, superintendents, and high school students would make for excellent talent show fodder is anyone's guess...aside from the ODAAT regulars wanting to do something different.

I know, really! And they were able to put something together really quickly! For people ,like you said who were supposed to be everyday people not showbiz folks!

Alex Cooper,

All I can say is that no matter the circumstance I enjoy these actors unleashing their inner ham.

One has to wonder if Emily and Orville could have been featured in a non retirement show episode with another theme.

Perhaps their wedding? Perhaps, God forbid, one of them could die like the platonic elderly couple featured in A Very Special Mr. Belvedere. (Spoiler Alert, it was kind of a two for one.)

How about having E and O get up on stage and sing a song themselves or with fellow senior Katherine? Mix things up a bit!

I am a huge fan of Nedra Volz, she lit up any sitcom she was in. I wish she had been featured more prominently in the show.
